I have a cisco2500 router with just serial ports. Can I convert one of these to rj45? If so, what do I need....

Thanx in advance..

Simply changes the serial connection from either a 25 or 9 way D type, to an RJ45 socket via an adapter.

There is not a way to convert a serial port to ethernet. The chips are different, the speeds are different and the firmware is different. If this is not good for you, then put the router up for sale on ebay or the like and find one that does have ethernet.

Sorry

I would not recommend the use of this product in a production environment but is fine for use in a study environment.

I stand corrected :)

Like you said though, I would be real nervous about using something like this in production. Even more so since the top speed of a Cisco serial port is around 4Mbps vs. the 10Mbps on Ethernet.

Leads to some interesting thoughts for a home lab though.

But.. at the price of roughly $220 (US)per unit, it's still cheaper to buy the right router.

Thanks for the link, it was interesting.

Darn, wish people could answere my questions with so much detail. :)

why not buy a transceiver??? the router should have an aui port?

Thx for all the advice guys...

I've bought myself a transceiver for the aui port, and managed to get hold of a g703 convertor for the serial port.

Thx for your advice anyway...

I will be attempting to connect this up at home this evening....one port going to my cable modem & the other going to my lan. Any advice b4 i attempt would be welcome.

Thx again people.
