The past couple days I have been having some strange and very annoying things happening to the email server. For one thing alot of users are getting these errors:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: RE:
Sent: 10/8/2004 12:17 PM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'USER'on 10/8/2004 12:18 PM
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator.
<ourmailserver.domain.com #5.5.0 smtp;550 Rejected by final destination>

I can not seem to find a pattern for the above situation. this particular email was sent back as undeliverable even though the user hit the REPLY button. The users email has not changed on either end. I could see where maybe on thier end something was happening however we are getting these messages from several different email addresses.

The second situation is that people are saying that they are not getting some emails. I have logging enabled and i do see the email address of the sender and the recepeint in the logs for the time they said they sent it. However it does not show in the users inbox. Would exchange hold these messages for some reason? We do have a Mcafee Web shield, however i checked the quaritnine area and no messages are quarintined.

any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think the emails with the Subject Re: is a virus. I get several that hit my firewall and they get rejected and sent back. Do a scan on those computers.

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.

I dont think its a virus because he was replying to the message, so he knew the person and was already corresponding with them.

I think at this point its our webshield or our ISP.

But most users do not send emails without a subject line. Since there is only a Re: in the suject line then he was not meaning to conversate with that person.

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.
