NO EMAIL! after installing WebAccess on GW6-help!

Hi out there,

I'm in deep stuff! Used the quiet day after Thanksgiving to install WebAccess on Netware6/GW6 server and now no email at all!

Install seemed to go OK except that JVM was unable to install; however, during load of GRPWISE.ncf, I get AUTOFAIL on GWENN3.nlm, which kills both MTA and POA. The GWENN3.nlm file is dated 4/6/2001.

If you have any suggestions, I'd be extremely grateful; come Monday if I don't have email running, I'll be strung up for sure

sounds like the gwenn was still loaded when you installed this

unload all the agents ie gwmta gwpoa gwenn etc

reinstall the webaccess and relaunch

the file will probably be copied across but the old one will still be in memory and loading

I have also seen this error if supporting modules were loaded. Restarting the server has worked for me.

Thanks for the help; however, all Groupwise-related nlm's were shut down before I started the install. I didn't specifically unload GWENN (didn't know about it) but I closed POA/MTA/GWIA in that order and they were all shut down successfully.

I've also rebooted server with no change. Did notice that the GWENN3.nlm file AFTER Web Access install was dated April,2001 - whereas the same file in my backup of 4 days ago (before web access) is dated June,2002. I tried putting the old file back but it still failed. I'm stumped where to go now.

what version of groupwise are you running
and what sp

cant check on our as it 6.5 sp1 but i can have a loopk at the sp version

do you have a config report before and after that you can run through the compare

so poa and mta come up still unresolved

type m gw*
if gwenn is loaded unload it
ok run the agent install again (i mean the poa/mta one)
point agent install to normal sys:system but IMPORTANT
when it asks you to enter domain name and dir just leave it empty and click next - it will say something like as nothing has been specified the configs will not be created
then finish
this will keep the original .poa and mta and grpwise intact but refresh the agents

assuming paths are in sys:system

check the grpwise ncf and poa etc that paths are ok and indeed you have a copy

I agree with terry712, re-run the agents install, then run the WebAccess install befor restarting the server. Make sure you have the proper web server designated and the directories for it to find the web page files. run the latest service pack files to keep everything constant. If you running all on the same server, check your port numbers to make sure their are no conflicts.

I had a similar prob where in my case the resolution was that I had set up WebAccess to run on the Netscape web server but had the wrong directories, because you actually want to run the Apachie server. ended up copying over the program files and everything worked fine.

I greatly appreciate your help; Netware & GW are both v6, sp2. I'd like to put on SP3, but now I'm not sure if that would just compound the current problem?

terry712, are you suggesting I can use the original GW6 CD install to put the PO/MT agents back in? If so, location of GW6 is actually not in SYS:system but in another data volume; assume I can point it there.

I think there may be a couple of problems going on here. mtbiker's comment re: web server rings true. I had planned to choose Apache, but found it wasn't listed on the install page so "settled for" Netscape for Netware which seemed like the only thing close. Java now doesn't work either.
mtbiker, could you please elaborate on "copying over the program files..." do you mean put the Apache files in the Novonyx folder? Also, you concurred with terry712, yet if I 1) reinstall the POA/MTA agents, then 2) install Web Access, won't I simply write over the GWENN3 file and be back where I am. Installing Web Access is what got me here.

just thought of something as I walked through "refreshing" the poa/mta. I'm using the GW6 original CD to reinstall these agents; we're running sp2, but the CD obviously isn't. Will that work?

Do you have a software distribution directory set up for your agents and client installs?

If so, when you ran your service pack update, it would have updated the distribution directory. By re-runing the installation, it will only re-load what you have.

As far as the Web server. Just the opposite, I had to copy the WebAccess program files from the Novonyx directory and copy over to the Apachie folder. I believe NWWEB or something like that. I'm not in front of my server right now to check. But you are correct to use the Apache server.

I would start with just the POA/MTA agents First. Find your software distribution directory, look for Agents, there you should see the 'setup'. Just launch from there, no CD required. WebAccess will be located under the "Internet" folder instead of the Agents. But leave that for now, let's just get the POA/MTA back on-line.

(Hint for the Software Distribution directory, look for where the users go to install the Client Software) Probably in the GroupWise directory, right next to the Domain Directory.

I'm must be getting rummy - now I'm really confused. Installed the agents again as terry712 outlined. No change. However, looking at my directory structure and file pointers, I don't understand what is happening. Inherited this system and it doesn't make sense to me.

The server autoexec.ncf says load sys:system\grpwise.ncf which says...
LOAD SYS:\SYSTEM\GWPOA @CASINO_P.POA
LOAD SYS:\SYSTEM\GWMTA @DOMAIN.MTA

However, under a different volume, there is a GRPWISE folder with Domain, PO & Software folders under it. There are GWENN3.nlm files in both Sys:system and Data:Grpwise
Which one is the actual program? I believe the software dist. folder you referred to is under the second, yet the server autoexec.ncf is pointing the former. ??

From a practical standpoint, would I be better off to bite the bullet and call Sento in the a.m.?

You also need to do a Java -exit before starting the install. If the java files are locked, you'll get all kind of weirdities.

Yes!!! thanks to your expert advice, email is back on duty. Still confused about location of stuff, but eventually followed terry712's suggestion of &quot;refreshing&quot; the agents, using the default location of SYS:SYSTEM instead of where I saw the domain/PO folders on another volume. Used the SP2 agent install.exe and, sure enough, after rebooting the server, GW was back. Can't thank you enough!!!

Now I just need to address the original purpose of my work, adding WebAccess Right now, JAVA is still not working (thus Backup Exec. won't run in Windows) and the Web server is still pointing to Netscape instead of Apache.

But with email back, at least the pressure is off - thank you in spades!!

my preferred option is that the domain should reside in a mail volume preferabley with the domain name as the directory and then in a different directory the postoffice should exist again with name of postoffice (always keep these less than 8)

then on my pc normally - i have a copy of the software distribution directory and when i service pack the server - i service pack this directory first and then i run the agent install from this directory. or you run the agent install direct from the sp. i never use overlay (just read the amount of tids that say overlay and issue) and the original cd should never be used as it's obviously older than sp)

my preference was always to have agents and .poa and .mta in sys:system but changing now to creating a directory in mail volume called agents - this is really only easier for clustering

apache - is the only one i would use - novoynx at a push and hell will freeze before i go to iis

you should get the option with sp3 - you will not get the option on original cd - i think the first one was sp3 beta
you run the new agent and it's runs a dream - i prefer not to run this on the server running mta and poa
