no charging issue HP DV4 laptop ??

I've got two (2) HP DV4 laptops, one has an issue. The one with an issue shut off while in use, checked the ac adapter with multimeter & it was dead. Put the battery in the other DV4 and it charged to 100% charging, so with the newly charged battery back into the problemed computer. Now the laptop started up, checked battery status, said 100% charging, but soon began to discharge though it stated it was charging.

Any thoughts about this? Any input is appreciated.

So you took a full battery from the working DV4 and installed it in the problem one and turned it on. Then you were using the AC adapter from the working DV4 on the problem one and it says it is charging but the battery is loosing charge? If you use the other battery and AC adapter from the working DV4, does it do the same?

Yes DrBob that is correct, no matter which battery the results are the same & the ac adapter which works on the good DV4 is the same adapter used on the problemed laptop.

Does the problem DC jack on the motherboard smell burnt or have a slight wiggle to it? If so, sounds like a DC jack issue that would involve replacing it or the motherboard. Since you say it says its charging, my guess is it intermittently charging and the DC jack is your culprit.

No, it is discharging, but the battery management says it is charging, when in reality it is not charging.

Does the laptop run fine off of just the AC adapter and no battery installed?

It will not run on AC alone, just with a charged battery. I am leaning towards the DC jack but I wanted other opinions before proceeding, thought someone may have had this problem before.

I've seen this alot. Odds are your looking at something like this on the inside of your laptop which is really easy to test:

Remove the plug from the motherboard and test the red and black leads at the end of the cable with a multimeter which will prolly show reduced or no voltage. If so, replace that cable/DC jack.

Another one that crops up is the battery management on Win7 gets screwed (sorry didn't mention OS).

Sympology, thanks, It is running 7 & I tried that at the beginning, looks to be the jack so I ordered one.
