after a restore of my DC onto a Virtual machine for testing, the CD drive doesnt work, it appears in Device manager but says it can not start. i also tried to plug in a USB CD ROM but i get the same problem.

any ideas?

thanks

Nigel

did you "connect it"? (take a look to he menu an see if the ide is connected or whether you are using an iso image instead the CD).

Cheers.

i did, i had the same problem when i used MS virtual PC too, it just seems to happen after i do a restore of the system state of my server

Nigel

may be you found a bug, did you conacted VMWare support?

i tried to get in touch but i kept coming to a page that said i had to pay for support, can you point me in the right direction?

also, what drivers do a virtual machine use even before i restored the system, do they use the Host's CD Drivers?

Nigel

VMWare can use both the CD-ROM drive and an iso image. As an example, you can create an iso image with:

dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/image.iso

(with windows use some utility as nero or others)

then edit the CD-ROM drive of your virtual machine in order to use an iso image instead of the physical CDROM.

I guess you could try it.

Cheers.

i got it working, there was a registry change. here it is

Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

thanks to Erdiko - you just made my life a lot easier!
