The wife dropped her machine right on the corner that has the HD in it. It will not boot not. If you run through to safe mode, it starts running through a big list of files until it hits system32\drivers\agp44.sys then halts. After about twenty secs - BSOD with the message
STOP C0000128 registry file failure
cannot load the hive system32\software or it's alternates
(not exact - it flashes way too quick)

I tried the IBM stuff and it won't load anything for the PC Doctor. I went to MS KB article Q307545 which shows my exact error. When I try and do the steps, step 3 is

copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak

it get - FILE COULD NOT BE COPIED

So my software registry is hosed? Anything I can do here besides a factory reset?

Thanks

If you can boot using something like a Bart PE cd you might be able to copy the file.

BART PE!
I knew that but couldn't remember the name. I've been randomly googling for that for an hour.

I actually got the files off no problem using the IBM native extras and just said to hell with it.

I'm service packing my new install of Windows XP now.
