Decided to move up to the A7N8XE Deluxe board and a 3200 with PC3200 DDR. At power, disks spin, fans run but no POST beep, and video is blank. Searched the group for similar problem, reseated cpu, ram, changed AGP card but no success. Replaced old A7N8 board and cpu, works fine, so I might rule out the power supply. New memory works on old board too. What could I have done? there are only two jumpers on the new board and they are set to default.
Suggestions, tricks greatly appreciated.

Clear CMOS !!!! most new mobo's need this to get running...

double check your HS seating and connector...

Ben

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

Thanks everyone for your input. After some isolation testing it turned out to be the cpu.

I have a similar problem, only I didn't do any upgrading.
My computer failed to wake up in the morning from its sleep mode and reboot did not result in a POST beep or a response on the screen,., but the lights lit up on the periphal drives and the fans worked. opened up the case used my compressed air liberally and tried again with no response.
Left the machine off for several hours (machine is usually on 24/7) and then tried again with no success.

Should I deduce from the result of the last response on this thread that I need to replace my Intel P4 3.0ghz processor? I don't know how much trouble the Intel 3yr warranty is, but the chip is less than 2 years old.

My motherboard is an ASUS p4T533c with a gig of (Samsung PC1066) RDRAM and an nVIDIA 900xgl vid card.

I have a sort of simeralrish problem with my Dad's PC at the moment. I haven't found time to fix it yet, but most people I speak to seem to think it's a fan/heatsink problem. So this weekend I am going to put a new heatsink on and see what happens. So I would double check your CPU heatsink fan seems to be turning at the usual speed. You could also see what happens next to my Dad's PC by checking this thread out in a day or so.

Glad you figured it out sqaguy, but want to point out for others still reading that it was common enough for me to remember that some new MOBOs come with the CMOS jumper set to clear (meaning it won't work until you change the jumper).

I bought a replacement processor for my 3 gig machine, but no joy, still no POST,
A friend, (DELL tech) was with me and was doing most of the work and felt (after 3 hours of trying several tricks including unplugging everything except the processor fan and video card that it might be the video card, but I didn't have another matching vid card for my AGP4x slot. Will try to find a video card of any kind to test with, but am really bummed that I paid >$200 for a new 3gig processor that didn't resolve the problem.

Well, it appears my problem stems from my motherboard.
I pulled the video card from the 3gigger cad station and installed it into my p3 866mhz and it worked,
so now with the knowledge that a new processor didn't work in the machine and my video card worked in another machine, it looks like I'll be shopping for another motherboard.

Good chance it's the motherboard... had exactly the same problem yesterday. The connectors on the motherboard for the cpu were not connecting... new motherboard.. worked like a charm.

Q

Sometimes the PSU will go bad, but still deliver power at one or more of the rails it uses (ie. 3v line dies, but the 5v and 12v lines still function) ergo, you will not be able to boot/Post the PC at all...

I've always had a spare PSU to test this fact, when similiar probs appeared...

For the above reason, and because many times the problem is with with the power supply anyway, all geeks and even would-be geeks should have a digital multimeter. They can be had real cheap and they will test the power rails on your power supply, but also help do household and auto wiring. A must-have!
You get the best deals on multimeters at the big-box lumber stores, i believe.

Good advice + great people = tek-tips

Found (on ebay), purchased & received used motherboard from factory lab last week,
installed last night and machine is back up and humming.
(I have 10 fans incl CPU and PS)
I'm a happy camper again.
thanks for being my sounding board

Hmmm, now I have a brandnew 3.06Ghz 800mhz sysbus processor, ... what to do?
