A few days ago I lost the audio on my Dell Inspiron E1505. After plowing thru various forums I learned that this could be due to Vista SP1 upgrade! I un-installed the SP1 upgrade and downloaded the Sigmatel STAC 92XX-C Major HD Audio driver from the Dell site but I keep getting the following message: device object not present restart the system & run setup again. After I restart, Windows tries to install it again but to no avail. When I look in Device Manager I see an Other Devices Category with Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus; when I look in properties this is what I see:

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem? Does anyone know what the issue is and how to fix it?

Thanks for any input.

If the sound is onboard it almost seems the sound card has died. Look in device manager uninstall all sound card, and then do the same in add remove programs then reboot and see if windows auto detects the card.

Just wanted to let you know the outcome. After spending hours with various Dell techs they determined that the operating system was corrupted and the best solution was to re-install everything. So I "took the plunge" and went thru the whole process of reinstalling the original XP then the Vista upgrade. And now I have "beautiful sound" and everything works just fine.
Thanks a lot for all your help on this.

Glad you got it working...

and thanx for posting the fix that worked for you...
