A few days ago I lost the audio on my Dell Inspiron E1505. After plowing thru various forums I learned that this could be due to Vista SP1 upgrade! I un-installed the SP1 upgrade and downloaded the Sigmatel STAC 92XX-C Major HD Audio driver from the Dell site but I keep getting the following message: device object not present restart the system & run setup again. After I restart, Windows tries to install it again but to no avail. When I look in Device Manager I see an Other Devices Category with Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus; when I look in properties this is what I see:

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem? Does anyone know what the issue is and how to fix it?

Thanks for any input.

Try it manually...

First unpack the EXE file, the one DL from DELL, using WinRAR, WinACE, 7Zip, etc... all you are interested in is the folder WDM... e.g. C:/WDM

then navigate to the Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus in the device manager...

Go to the driver tab and click on update driver. A screen will pop up like in the automatic install. Select "install for a list or specific location" this time and click next. Uncheck "search removable media" and check "include this location in search". Click the browse button and go to the directory where you saved the driver (e.g. C:/WDM).

alternatively, download the driver directly from INTEL, here is the link:

Have you tried right-clicking on any .exe and running it elevated (As Admin) to see if it installs.

Have you tried disabling your anti virus, Windows Defender, turning off UAC, all just temporarily, to see if you can get it installed?

What about temporarily disabling everything (non-Microsoft) in MsConfig?

Thanks for the quick answers.
I had already tried these. Windows tells me that the driver from the Intel web site is the wrong one. No matter what I try I keep getting the same object not present message. I tried a system restore back to a date in Sept. when I know everything was working but the device still shows up with the yellow sign indicating it's not working. After the restore it's in the sound, video and game controllers section now with the following message in the device status:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39).
I don't know if the driver I originally downloaded from Dell is the right one since it does not specifically list the E1505 when I install it.
I'll keep looking but it doesn't look promising!!

Thanks. The version I downloaded earlier is from 10/24/08 which is supposed to be the latest and greatest but I'll try this one from 2007 and let you know how it works out.

When I tried to install it I got the message that it is not the correct one.
I tried to install the driver in safe mode but I got the same error messages.
At this point I'm not sure where to look anymore!!!
If anyone has any other suggestions I would welcome them.
Thanks for the help.

Look in programs and features in control panel for anything that points to the sound card and uninstall them.Restart the computer and see if the found new hardware wizard starts. If it does abort the install and then run the installer from Dell.

Have you tried a site like they will install a program on your machine and that will then perform a scan of your system which will list your installed or missing drivers and also inform you if there are any updated drivers in existence. The scan is free, but the site wants cash to enable downloading drivers. The thing is, it will give you some idea of what driver name .exe file you should be searching for.

I have used this method myself when chasing hard to find drivers.

Another thing you can try is the free Belarc Advisor to see how that describes (identifies) your hardware.

A certain amount of information about device identity is hidden away in Windows itself. This article might help you dig that out too.

Thanks for the answers. I will check out driveragent and windowssecrets.
How do you stop the new hardware wizzard from starting automatically?

Found new hardware message will not go away after install
thread779-740484

Disable new hardware wizard auto detect
thread779-797567

disable new hardware option
thread779-376415

For basic information have a read of "Installing devices overview" in the Help and Support program.

For help in checking Registry settings try this.

314479 - How to Add OEM Plug and Play Drivers to Windows XP

I disabled the add hardware option but that didn't help.

Belarc doesn't list anything although there is an "audio device on high definition audio bus" listed in Other Devices although there are no drivers listed.

I will check out the links that you provided and continue my quest!

Thanks.

Notsavy, when you open the faulty device (Device Manager) go to the DETAILS tab...

there under HARDWARE ID there should be some codes, e.g. VEN_10DE&DEV_0059 (Vendor and Device numbers, in the example it would be the nVidia nForce Audio Codec Interface), could you list these?

This is what is listed:

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7690&SUBSYS_102801BD&REV_1022
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7690&SUBSYS_102801BD

Thanks

So you have a SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC on the system...

I've taken a look at the driver, the one from INTEL will not work it is missing the correct identifier... the driver link provided by tlcscousin should be the correct one, it has the correct identifier in the INF files...

what flavor of Vista do you have? e.g. 64bit or 32bit...

I need to know this to be able to provide the correct procedure to fix the problem (this will involve a bit of editing)...

Thanks for the answers.

Vista SP1 32 bit.

Ok thanks.
I'll give it a shot and let you know the outcome.

I tried in regular and safe mode and got the same message: "device object not present".
I'll keep researching but if you can think of something else let me know.
Thanks
