IPO: Rel.11.1
IP Phones: J179
Netgate Firewall at IPO location
Netgate Firewall at each of the 5x J179 locations
VPN tunnel set up to each J179

Hi all,

I have 5x remote J179's working off of our IPO in the office via VPN tunnels. The remote IP exts can make external calls and can also make internal calls to the digital phones on the IPO.

The problem comes when a remote J179 tries to intercom another remote J179. Their is no audio. It rings but neither user can hear anything.

Is their a setting I am missing in the IPO or is this a Firewall issue?

Thanks Derek

routing issue to test disable direct media. Then if that works there is a routing issue that needs to be addressed.

So disable the "Allow Direct Media Path" on each of the 5x remote J179 extensions and then test to see if 2 way audio works? If it does, then IT admin need to check the routing settings between the multiple firewalls?

The default setup for VPN tunnels is that packets cannot be routed directly to another VPN tunnel. You need to enable this ability on your VPN tunnels.

Actually, in this situation, I'd suggest the disabling direct media path is the correct answer.

Take Care

I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

Disabling direct media causes all media to go through the IPO. That causes load on the IPO as well as poorer voice quality due to transcoding. It should only be used as a workaround until the routing issue is addressed.
