Hi All:

We have had a problem on our network for some time now with certain machines getting "The Page Cannot be Displayed" error when trying to go to onec specific site: ogha.psc.gov/ogha. Some machines connect fine and some do not. The ones that do not connect through Internet explorer will, however, connect through Firefox but this browser is "not supported" for this particular website and I.E must be used.

Yes. We have determined definitively that the problem is not with the host, or firewall-related. It is specific to certain settings…registry entries…??...of these particular computers.

My question is this: Does anyone know of a program that will mirror precisely all IE settings on a known good machine (i.e. one that can connect to the website) on a known bad machine (one that cannot connect).

Any ideas are much appreciated.

Check the extensions page for foxfire. There is an extension to install, called IE View. This may help.

Thanks for the response, but I really must use Internet Explorer. It is a government site that prohibits the use of any web browser besides I.E.

Try running temporarily with "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions" unchecked and see how this goes.

"This specifies that you want to disable features you installed for use with Internet Explorer that may have been created by companies other than Microsoft.
If you encounter problems with Internet Explorer that you cannot resolve, you can use this option to help determine if third-party features are causing the problems without uninstalling the feature. You must restart Internet Explorer after turning this option on or off.

If I try this...and it works...my first child's name will be "htmlman". Sure, he/she will be teased...but it will all be worth it. ;-)

I'll let you know...thanks!

That would be n honor to page makers ever ware
You might try these links also.

Sorry Htmlman...no go. First child's name will still be Fred...regardless of gender.

HTMLman...I'm suspecting something with IE on the problematic machines...I googled the instructs on reinstalling IE and it's just a matter of running install comand on the IE.inf along with the XP OS cd. Do you think I might be chasing a red herring? Also, would reinstalling IE in this way be equivalent to a fresh install of IE sans various and sundry patches and updates?

In a race to find a cure,

Is this site publicly accessible? I can't seem to get to it with IE or FF.

I wanted to check if it set a cookie. One thought that I had is that if it's set as restricted in IE's cookie settings and the site requires a cookie, you could get this result.

Excellent thought. No it's only accessible through the NIH network. I will check cookies again but I'm pretty sure others already checked this. Again, thanks for the input.

OK, so I'm thinking I've been doing this kind work for about 12 years now. It occurs to me that an incredibly useful piece of software would be something that could be loaded onto a troubled machine and it would automate the troubleshooting process with, of course, interaction from a technician based on success or failure of each ensuing recommendation. I know you're probably saying, "yeah it's called Microsoft Help" but everyone knows what a joke that is.

I also think that every single error message should have with it a web link that offers a web-based version of the above, rather than the pathetic info that Event Viewer offers for each event when you use its built-in feature that usually leads to nowhere.

I'm just rambling at my keyboard...sorry.

Back to the race!

Joe

I am having a similar problem. When I try to access a website on Adelphia (at another location, my work machine) I can not do it through a router (I tried a 3com and a Dlink) but if I have the connection directly to my PC (no router) I can get the site. This (so far) is the only site I cannot connect to with anything (cannot ping it and tracert gets nothing after the router address of 192.168.1.1).

I have tried the router default settings, different settings no go... it stopped working a few weeks ago, and I thought it was Adelphia or a bad router, now it seems that it may be something else going on...any ideas?

theedge103, you might want to start your own thread as people stop looking at a thread they are no longer interested in following.
