hello all,
i have a problem getting nim to install an earlier version of aix. I know you can't get a 5.3 master to install 5.3 etc.

1. setup nim on 5.2, installs 5.2 ok onto f50 p660 p650 etc
2. install spot/lpp for 4.3.3, won't install to f50 f40
3. doesn't seem to install 5.2 anymore either!

1. setup nim on 5.3, installs 5.3 ok onto f50 p660 p650 etc
2. install spot/lpp for 5.3, won't install to f50 f40
3. and doesn't like 5.3 much either

i have checked /etc/bootptab /tftboot but I can't see anything wrong

the earlier system pings, gets tftpboot/f50 etc
downloads all the blocks (it matches the server file)
then the system reboots, reboots again and then boots of disk.

anyone else seen this or got clues?
server is s70, nothing else on network
aix 5204 5300 and 51?? (date 11/2002)

I can not determine your actual problem, may you could presice it a little bit ( which versions do not work, which versions work, what are the steps you are made ? etc.).

What I can say from experience is:

setting up a AIX5.3 nim master and creating a AIX 5.1 lpp_source and spot works definitely for 32bit and 64bit machines as well.

I doubt, that you can install a AIX4.3.3 machine with a AIX5.3 nim-master holding a AIX4.3.3 lpp_source and spot. THis did not even work with a nim-master on AIX5.1 for me.

Very uncommon is your problem, that you can not even install an AIX5.3 machine after creating a minor.release spot and lpp_source. May you have a second problem here??

As I said in the beginning, more informations are needed....

to summarise:
a. i can install ver x, and it nim boots other systems.
b. if i install ver x-1 -2 etc. it wont nim boot anything
it hangs after tftbooting image
c. even ver x won't nim boot anymore

i thought it might be 43x not compatible with 5.x, but it fails with 5.1 under a 5.3 system

i am going to try setting up a 5.1 system, get it to boot,
upgrade to 5.2, see if it boots other 5.2's, then see if it boots 5.1's as well

I thought nim was capable of booting any os lower than itself?

yes, i create a new spot and lppsource for each release

the install builds a spot5204, lppsource5204. I then created a
bosinst.data with noprompt and a 1st boot script, and all works fine.

i then create a spot5107, lppsource5107.
nim boot fails after downloading image - size is correct
no errors.
this is with my bosinst and 1st boot script or not.
I can't see why the original system fails at all.
If i restore from mksysb just back to 5.2 it works fine again!

I have a 5.3.3 NIM master and I had to fix a crashed 570 partition with 5.1 recently - I actually rebuilt an lpp_source and spot from the 5.1 cds - updated it to ML5 then rebuilt the server using the mksysb. I did this with the help of the IBM helpdesk. So I know it can be done.

are you going across subnets? Your firewall team may have tftp boot disabled on one subnet and not the other.

GTGMojo. How did you get 5.1 on a 570 lpar? I thought 5.2 ml4+ was the min.

original problem SOLVED!

after a subsequent install of lpp and spot, my bootps entry in the /etc/inetd.conf file became not commented out!

what happened was:
a. install 5.3
b. install nim with lpp and spot for 5.3 -> nim install ok

c. install lpp and spot for 5.2 (etc)
d. -> no nim install for 5.3 0r 5.2

e. fix inetd.conf
f. -> nim installs 5.3 & 5.2

g. install lpp & spot for 5.1 4.3.3 etc.
h. -> nim installs them all!

JUST THE 1st SPOT & LPP (ANY VER) SEEMS TO RESET INETD.CONF

From - GFGMojo to Hfaix - You are correct, it was a Regatta not a 570 - but still worked.
