NIC Refuses to install

Anyone come across the following behaviour before?

I am trying to install a NIC in my Win 2K box. I have tried two brands. I put the card in, boot the machine and let Win 2K find the card. It asks where the drivers are, so I point it to them. It copies them across and then I get the installation complete dialog box which shows an error message: The inf or installed device description does not match the set class. (Something like that).

And now the NIC shows up in Device Manager, but with the yellow exclamation mark.

Any help will be rewarded with stars....

I had a similar problem when installing nics into my Win2K box and it turned out the drivers weren't written specifically for Win2k. Maybe you could go to the manufacturer's website and see if there are updated drivers for Win2k there.

Already done that mate.

The support guy from Realtek (for that is who the PCI NIC is from) sent me the very latest files and I still received the error message. The error message is the key.

Anyone Else care to help me?

I've got a RealTek card in my 2000 machine and it works fine with the 2000 driver, I never even installed the RealTek driver at all.

Have you tried the card in a different slot?

It's pretty certain that it's a driver fault. I assume that you've tried W2k specific drivers

Personally speaking I've had a lot of problems with Realtek network cards and NT, so now I just by 3com or intel.

However you mentioned that you had two cards, what make / model was the other one ?

Also remember to remove the hardware from System / Hardware / device, then cold start before trying another card.

Hope this helps

I've also tried an NE 2000 compatible. this gave the same error message.

I have tried the Windows generic drivers. They give the same error message.

I cant remove the device from device manager because Win 2K tells me that it is needed for boot up. But sometimes after this message the device has disappeared.

I am confident that the key to this problem lies with the error message, has anybody seen a similar error message?
