I have a Compaq Prolinear Server PL1600 with 2 nics. I do a ifconfig -a and this is all I get:
lo0: flags=1000849<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 8232 index 1 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask ff000000

Where do I go from here?

Thanks

Have you done a boot -r from the OK prompt - this should pick up the NICS.

Thanks Ken, I will try that later tonight. Is there anything else you can think of?

Thanks again!

Oh by the way, it auto boots to Gnome or CDE, I use the terminal window from there. Is there a way to boot into just the terminal instead of the gui?

You will need to confiugre the NICs, a boot -r won't suddenly allow you to see them from ifconfig -a.

There is no way to avoid booting to the gui if you're accessing from the console, although you could login via a Failsafe mode if you don't like the CDE, this will just bring up a single xterm instead.

What all do I need to do to configure the OS so I can see the cards?

create the appropiate /etc/hostname.<interface> file

then use ifconfig(1M) to plum it in, e.g.

#ifconfig hme0 192.168.1.132 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

Don't think I've missed anything out...

I did attempt configuring the /etc/hostname file and included the broadcast address. I must be missing other files to configure or I need to start from scratch and re-install the OS. I am however able to see all the drivers installed for the nics.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will however re-look the hostname file again.

To see the card with an ifconfig, a simple "ifconfig <interface> plumb" will prepare the card for config.

Might it need the module for the driver loaded into the kernel? man modload

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by - Douglas Adams

On sparc's there's a hardware detected file called /etc/path_to_inst.might be worth cat'ing that to see if your card's detected???

Have a look in /kernel/drv for elxl to see if the driver is in the kernel.

Thanks for all the replies. As soon as I get back home from (home) Texas I will give this a try. Thanks again!

all these files exist...not sure what to do next...seems I have tried quite a bit. Thanks again!

umm ... what are the NIC's in your machine, it seems to have been assumed that they're 3com cards (elxl), and not Intel Etherpro (iprb) ... or any other type.

As soon as I get the opportunity, hopefully in a couple of days I am going to pick this back up. I think we will go with a full re-install after I verify what the physical nics are. Thanks to all!
