Here is one that’s causing be to forcibly remove what's left of my hair....
Have 2 computers that have 3 NIC's each in them. 1 NIC connects to my internal LAN and the other 2 connect to 2 different dsl connections. I run FTP software on each computer. Each computer runs 2 separate "domains" for the ftp service. One domain is generally quite busy while the other is not. Each "domain" is bound to only one IP address. The IP addresses on the Internet side are completely different networks but share common DNS entries.
Problem: After an interval that seems to change all the time (seems random) one or the other or even both the external NIC's just seems to stop responding. In trying to connect to the ftp server it just hangs. No response in the ftp client but on the server side in the log window you see an entry for the computer trying to connect but then the server disconnects.
If you give the network card an electronic slap in the face (right click the connection and choose "repair" it will then start working fine. Or if you disable it and re-enable it this does the same.
This behavior started when I "downgraded" the computers from Windows 2000 Server to Windows XP Pro. The computers did not do this at all under Win2K. None of the hardware was changed.
During the process of trying to remedy this I have replaced all the NIC's with brand new ones of the same type. They were formally a mix of several manufactures and speeds. I have also disabled every single power saver function I can find and it still does this. I am fairly convinced this is a Windows XP "thing" but I'll be dammed if I can figure it out.
Any takers??
