Will the Merlin Magix take NI-1 or NI-2 setting on a PRI?? If yes, what's the setting under the switch type?

Thanks,

Killbox

The Merlin Legend/Magix only uses 'Custom', not NI1 or NI2, that is why you won't find an option to select them.

That confuses me because NI-2 is the same as the Nortel protocol (DMS100) and the Magix takes that??

The issue is, I installed a PRI on the magix a year ago. It's a 5e/custom. Now we're putting in a TOshiba and moving the Magix to a location in the Bronx. The Toshiba is liking the carriers protocol, so Toshiba told us to have them change it NI-1 or NI-2. I was going to have them change it to something and test the Toshiba. Then Cut over to the TOshiba on Friday night. What to do, What to do?

Thanks,

I just finished bringing up a Legend on PRI, The C.O. initially was set with NI2 and the D-Channel would not stay up. The protocol change to "custom" is required.

The Nortel DMS100 is closer to NI1 not NI2, but not exactly NI1. The info I have is similar to Franke's--the Legend doesn't do NI2.

Legend or Magix will not support NI1 or NI2
If PRI switch is DMS100 or DMS 250 request the protocol NTNAPRI if vendor says they only have NI1 or 2 ask if they can emulate a 5ESS with AT&T Custom protocol, the switch tech can do this immediately, then set your switch type to 5ESS.

If the switch type is DMS100 or DMS250 do as stated above and also tell the provider to set the "L1 Flag in the trunk sub group to yes". This seems to be a must.

OK, let me get into this as well....

Who is the vendor?

Cbeyond has some CUSTOME software to make this work.

XO has to (Pardon the expression) SPLIT a BRICK to make it work. (But, they can make it work !)

Other vendors can make it work, but again, sometimes it's like GIVING BIRTH!

If the vendor is Cbeyond, I can give some info about how they should set it up.

This is what the LEC's hve told me: The NI-1 or "old" protocol is the same as the AT&T Custom, or is selected for the AT&T custom protocol. The NI-2 is what they "want" to use. The CO Nortel switches can send either way, but if you connect the Magix to it, it must be set to NI-2. So from what I can gather, NI-1 = AT&T Custom = Lucent CO equipment, and NI-2 = "newer" = Nortel CO equipment.

Ken1713,
I left my Magix set to DMS100 and added the L1 flag as you suggested and everything works fine. Thanks for the info. Bob

Ken should get a STAR!

And we should all keep this link handy!

After all, this has been going on for the past 6 months.

I've found that for some reason, most providers think that coming off of the 5ESS switch should always be NI2. I've even heard some techs say that the protocol is the same, but for my experience, custom is the only safe bet.

You have to FORCE the issue with carriers!

1) NI-1 is not AT&T custom and will not run, the Nortel protocol in their LT_DEF is U-449 on a DMS-100/250.

2) AT&T custom is U-459 in the DMS-100/250 LT_DEF--INSIST ON IT!!!

3) NTNAPRI is a Nortel protocol for Nortel switches, it will work on Magix switches if set for DMS-100 and NTNAPRI, but be prepared for Hiccups, it is their NI-2 and it will work for a while. When it screws up, you can usually reboot the switch and it will clearup for a while. Something to do with the maintenance messaging in the "D" channel, if I remember correctly. This was a compromise developed by Lucent/Avaya because there are so many DMS's out there. You can buy 2 DMS's for the price of a 5ESS.

4)God help you if you ever get tangled up with an old Verizon DEX-5, just shoot yourself!

This comes from much PRI turn-up experience on Definity and Legend/Magix, plus the help of a friend who is an ISDN Guru at the SBC ISDN test center.

What phonesrus stated is partially true. Here is a run down of the PRI options in a DMS central office:

1 U459PRI - 5ESS custom protocol. This will work for a basic PRI interface, but does not have the fancy features a 5ESS central office has for the 5ESS custom.

2 N449PRI - System 85 protocol

3 U449PRI - 4ESS custom protocol

5 NTNAPRI - DMS custom protocol. This is not a true NI-1 protocol since the maintenance messages use an older protocol discriminator information element.

6 NIPRI - This is Nortel's NI-2 protocol.

The DMS 100 switch can use all of the above. The DMS-250 can use all except the NIPRI protocol.

If you require the delivery of a calling name, then the the NI-2 (NIPRI) protocol must be used. As long as the PBX is fully NI-2 compliant, then there should not be any problems with NI-2. Fully NI-2 compliant means the protocol discriminator information element in the maintenance (service) message is set to 0000 0011. This can be tested at turnup by having the LEC person do a PMDEBUG to watch the messages. Then have the LEC busy then return to service one b channel. The LEC person can tell if the PBX is responding properly with the PMDEBUG tool....asuuming they know how to read it.

Adn yes the field L1FLAG in table TRKSGRP must be set to yes (Y). L1FLAG is a layer 1 flag.
