Ok, I'm not sure how much cross platform knowledge is floating about, but what i need is a fast (read:not samba) file transfer system (aiming at NFS) between 2 virgin systems.

Server 2008 Enterprise Edition, and Solaris 10 x86

Now, I would class myself as a windows poweruser, but i am by no means an administrative god, and i dont want to touch active directory or anything like that until i know im not going to funk it up.

Various guides floating around the internets say that an AD server is needed to manage windows/unix identity managment. My windows system is going to be my "workstation" so i dont want to chugg it up too much.

I dont care which is the server, i just want fast RW access across systems (1Gb dedicated ethernet line between)

Basically, help

Cheers guys

Okay we have 2 considerations here.. You wan't

1. Fast file transfer between hosts

- Have you considered just using SCP(one of the SSH protocols) or are you looking to permanently "map" drives

2. Consolidated Authentication

- Are you actually looking to maintain passwords/account info across both Solaris and Windows boxes? If so look at the following to see if it helps

I've considered SCP and yes i do want to map the drive, but scp would need cygwin on the workstation, which isnt what i want.

Dont really care about mantaining passwords.

Because this is a dedicated line, i can configure the NFS server to only accept one interface so I would even be content with everything RW to everyone; its the getting windows to talk to it that is interesting / concerning.

there are SCP implementations that do not require Cygwin.. you can download Putty which has an SCP client or you can download WinSCP

Have you tried SFtpDrive

Essentially it's similar to SSHFS in Linux which allows you to mount a drive using SSH, therefore no need for an NFS implementation

Sounds good, trying it now; Any idea about how much of a speed difference there will be between NFS and SFTP?

ps i would still prefer to do this in NFS simply for compatability, and the obvious FOSS advantages. esp since sftpdrive is not free

I understand that, the only reason I recommend this avenue is that I have previously solutioned this for clients who connect to other 3rd party hosts. Since NFS protocols are not entirely secure, I'd rather not use them across firewalls. I find the SSH route "cleaner

Agreed, but as stated, this is over a dedicated patch line between the two machines so security is a non issue; it is and can only be a 2 host network
