Newly installed XP, network connection but no internet

Hi

Got a weird one here .
I often fix PC's in my garage.
Fresh install of XP, hoo up to my network using homeplugs, internet not a problem.
NOW
I have just installed XP on a PC, it gets a proper IP address, I was getting 169.254.n.n yesterday, but now I get a 19.168.0.n
I can see the other PC on the network.
But I can't access the internet at all from this PC.
I've tried another PC on this network (using same homeplug) not a problem, updated fine.

Any ideas ?
I've formatted and installed XP again, but the same issue.

If you don't want to post the above, just do the following and see if it works for you.

At the command line, type:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

yes I did, still the same, I try and go on the internet and it transfers in bytes per sceond, not the 400K + i get from the same network point on a different PC.
One thing that is also odd is that if I look at the network connection it shows as firewalled, yet on my PC upstairs, it doesn't.
I only have windows firewall on both of the machines, so its odd that the PC (with the problem) is showing as firewalled. I don't have any firewall software on it.
It was like this after XP install and up to SP3 installed.

This is looking very odd, I@ve done loads of PC's from the garage and not one problem ever.

All devices are installed correctly.
I am at a total loss as to why this is happening

Don't blame the garage just yet. Time to try a different network card in that PC just for the heck of it. Assuming you have been using the same network CABLE when you compare these machines.

I'm just suspicious that it's NOT O.S.-related and not router-related and not ISP-related.

You could also throw a wireless USB card in there if you had one and you have wireless floating around.

^^^ I'm betting that won't do it, but I've been wrong before. If that DOESN'T help, then I'm more inclined to blame the NIC itself, in which case another card will prove things.

Is there any security software installed (anti-virus firewall not forgetting about xp's built in firewall which you can disable in control panel-->Windows Firewall-->Off)?
It looks like you have actual connectivity if you can ping an internet address and get DNS resolution and replies that would suggest software blocking the browser.

ok will try that,
the PC itself has an onboard LAN and there was also a card with it.
I was using the PCI lan as I had the driver and tried it as soon as I had XP installed, prior to ANYTHING else being installed.
Previously I tried using the onboard LAN but got the same results.

I've tried it with Windows firewall off and no difference,

The machine in the garage was connected using the same cable and Homeplug as another PC that works fine.

I will try your download link Lemon and will post the results.
One thing I will try tomorrow is a direct connection to a modem.
I asked my cousin if he had any internet problems before and he said no.

If you are using Internet Explorer, check the proxy settings:
Go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab > LAN Settings button and make sure everything is UN-checked.

Have you checked for a proxy server setting in Internet options?
Have you logged into the router and checked that it doesnt have a rule set to deny connection to the computer in question?

Q: did you run the Internet Connection Wizard?

in case you haven't, here are the instructions as to how:

if you have, you could also issue the following commands, from a CLI (DOS box) and reboot:

ipconfig /flushdns

netsh winsock reset catalog


if the above does nothing to alleviate the problem, then I'm also inclined to believe along the lines of Goom's reasoning, that the NIC is shot...

also for your information:

the ping statistic, the PC seems to resolve correctly...

you can ping the LoopBack address (127.0.0.1), you can ping Google.com, just not "gateway" (which does not resolve on my system either)...

If you can ping by FQDN and it resolves and replies i doubt it would be the NIC although stranger things have happened.
Usually no browsing but ping works ends up being software or settings on the computer.
I suppose it could be an auto negotiation issue but usually that gives a network cable unplugged error.
Ping gateway will never work as windows has no idea where gateway is it looks for a network device on the network named gateway.
Have you tried safe mode with networking which normally bypasses most software (although now some of the anti virus companies have started making their software so that it runs in safe mode).

SOLVED !!!!

tried it on a set up without the router and it worked fine.
I couldn't see anything on the PC that would stop the internet traffic, nothing on the router either (even gave it a fixed IP on the router)

No idea what caused this, but its gone away now.

Ping gateway most likely referred to pinging your Default Gateway address as shown in ipconfig /all, e.g. ping 192.168.0.1
