Newly installed Openstage phones not showing up in DLS

Ok,
I admit to being just dangerous when it comes to the DLS, self taught and all.. So I have finally got my manager to try out some Openstage phones, as our entire existing enterprise is all Optipoint 420. I have installed about 40 Openstage-15 phones for a new department, but when I search the DLS for the extension number or IP address of the installed phone, it does not find the device. I can do the same with any of my Optipoints, and it finds them every time. So am I missing something in the DLS that needs to be added for it to recognize the Openstage devices??? (I"ll take yes for 100 Alex). Thanks in advance for any guidance....

You don't treat Openstage phones any differently. Have you scanned the network from DLS and it's seen them? Are the phones aware of the DLS (IP address of DLS exists in config)? Have you synced the DLS to the Hipath? If 'yes' to all these things - it should all be working normally.

If you are not syncing your DLS to the PBX it has no way to know you added those phones. Please be aware that if you are NOT syncing your DLS it would not be wise to just perform a manual sync or turn on auto sync until you make sure you know what it is going to do. Our PBX uses 4-digit extension numbers. If I remember correctly the default sync settings for DLS will pull down the stations with the full 10-digit (ISDN) station number. If you sync it and it imports things wrong you will have cleanup to do. You will also need to make templates and profiles for those phones if you want DLS to automatically push out the settings. Our techs had a script they used to enter in all the stations, and when I asked why our system was not set up to sync they told me not to touch it - later after I had some training I found out why!

If you only have a few it might be berst to enter them by hand if you are not syncing....

To anyone attempting to use Deployment Service, I recommend the following Unify computer-based training course: OS4DLSSDS

This course covers step-by-step DLS Server installation procedures, step-by-step DHCP set-up procedures, explains the Auto-Configuration and synchronization processes specifically for OpenScape 4000, then shows the student how to use DLS for basic services. The course is not free, but it is worth every penny if you are struggling with DLS.

Good Luck!

While I'd love to go to the training class, it is going to be a hard sale to my manager. They had the DLS server in place since 2011, and the previous tech had no idea how it worked, and never touched it. I got here a little over a year ago and have figured out how to do a few minor things with it, but my manager basically doesn't think it is useful since they never utilized it.I think we have around 600 IP phones deployed...

How do things work when you add a new Optipoint? Does the DLS see it automatically and then you just have to go in and assign a profile? Do you have to go into the DLS and create a record for the phone manually and specify its profile, and then when you plug in the phone it just comes up and works?

There are settings in your DHCP server as well that will determine what happens. If you have it set right the phone boots up on the network and says "Hey, I'm a phone, give me an IP address" and DHCP says "Here is your address, now you need to talk to this system over here (DLS)" which causes the phone to communicate with the DLS. Normally that would be enough to get the DLS to at least see the phone's MAC address and create a record for it, from which you could search without specifying an extension and it will give you all the phones. Go to table mode and all the "orphan" phones should show up at the top of the list - list look for that MAC address.

There is one other thought... Did your buy your OpenStage phones new?? I know I asked this question of my vendor, but I don't remember the answer so I will just throw it out here for some wizard to answer.... If you set up your DHCP server for Option 43 in 2011 you set it up for Siemens. The name has since changed to Unify. I do not know if you have to make a second Option 43 entry for Unify or if everything is the same and it still uses the same criteria as Siemens. If it IS different, and you have everything else set up right, that could be keeping the DHCP server from sending brand new Unify Openstage phones to visit the DLS.

That is a way shot in the dark because I am not a networking person, but I do understand the system flow diagram and how everything related to each other...

Our LAN has specific VLANs for all the voice stuff too, and there are settings on each network switch that specify which VLAN it belongs to, etc....

Just more food for thought. I'm in the same boat as you - my company is too cheap to pay for training, but I was smart enough to bury it down deep in the project budget when we did our upgrade and I managed to get through the whole North American Service Training Curriculum from Unify - I just need to take the certification exam, and if I am smart enough to pass it I should be good. If you can find a way to take classes I recommend them - the instructors for the classes in the US are excellent.

The DLS course does not require travel. It is computer-based training, which means that you download the training material to your PC, and take the course when you have time. To sign up for a computer-based course, a student ID is required on the Unify training server, but I do not know the process of acquiring a student ID. I assume that the Unify Training website has a FAQ section, or a means by which to ask questions.

Good Luck!

The DHCP setup for optiPoint phones and OpenStage phones is covered 100% in the DLS computer-based training course. In my opinion, this DLS course explains the theory and shows HOW TO setup and use DLS and DHCP better than any other documentation that I have seen.

Good Luck!

Don,
Yes, the Openstage phones we just deployed, are new. All of our Optipoints are refurbed. All of our phones are HFA, so to install a phone I first configure the SBCSU record, and then place the phone. When the phone boots up if the phone is at factory default, it will prompt me for the fully qualified number. Usually after I input the number, and then the IP for the DLS, save and exit, the phone will initialize. If the phone is refurbed, I usually perform a factory reset, and input the info as above, but sometimes the phone will not initialize, so I go back into the phone and input the STMI (gateway) IP and the extension number, then the phone will initialize. Oh, and my original problem I think I caused by not inputting the DLS address in the phone when I installed them... The phones came up as soon as I set the extension number and the gateway IP. I never got to the DLS entry... I've accessed a couple of phones via the web, and once I input the DLS IP into the phone, then I can search and find the phone in the DLS.
