yo dudes i just built a new pc (not the one i am using now) but when it loads up windows it goes to blue screen and restarts, i have a feeling its because i put my old harddrive (from this pc) into it, i may be wrong but can anyone help me

Start with a list of your components, that will help determine if it is a compatiblility issue.

my bad here are the specs
asus a8n sli premium motherboard
athlon x2 4600+ cpu
xfx 7600gt xxx gpu
1gb RAM
120gb hard drive
i think these are all the relevant specs btw i am a bit of a noob this is the first pc ive built so bear that in mind during technical explanations lol

Do you actually get the windows start up before it goes blue? If you do I think a fresh install of Windows would fix this. if you are worried about data you can always add that existing drive as a slave to a new drive and then still be able to get anything off of it you need.

What operating system on the old hard drive? If XP you are guaranteed incompatibility except for an identical M/B.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

Can you start up in safe mode? (pressing F8 after POST)
When you get the blue screen, the last file at the bottom of the screen on the right is the one causing the problem, if you can boot in safe mode you can remove the device killing the system.
Also, you could try to repair the OS if you have the CD. The trick here is to boot to the CD, let it load drivers and it will get to a screen where you can either install the OS or repair using the recovery console. Chose install, NOT repair, Then you will have an option in the next screen or 2 or 3 to repair the Windows OS. It is here that you want to chose repair. Good luck!

That's a w2k issue, and it's been dealt with here (by me among others, although I haven't got a moment to go find the answers). The fact is that W2k often does not recognized new configurations. It's stinking fussy that way.

Try starting from the CD rom (Just put the cd in it and start up ..sometimes that works for no rational reason). Otherwise either install or repair may work. Good luck.

What we are saying is:
Your hard drives operating system was configured on your old setup which presumably had a very different chipset, so you will have to either repair or clean install XP for the new setup to work properly.
