Newly Aquired GP System - saying we need 100MB network connection

We acquired a company that uses Great Plains and they have the server in their office because their reseller of GP said you have to have a 100MB between the server and the desktop, and they prefer 1GB connection. So I get 100MB to the desktop to run all apps, but they are saying GP needs 100MB on it's own or it will run slow. This would effectively prohibit anyone from housing GP in a data center not housed locally unless you had a blazing internet/vpn connection. I just cannot believe this is a requirement... Thoughts from the experts?

You don't mention which version of Dynamics GP that you have.

The Microsoft recommended system requirements for Dynamics GP 2010 are for a 1GB Ethernet card in all machines. They don"t specifically mention the rest of the network infrastructure. Can you run it on less? Yes and depending on your volume of data, the setup of the system vis-a-vis report dictionary locations, the number of users, and the size of the database, you may get entirely satisfactory performance with something less than the recommendation.
