Hi Everybody
I am completly new to in design I am 68 and a retired printer of 50 years.I have recently taken on the responsibilty of editor of our village magazine 400 copies and I have loads of issues which I will have to tackle one at a time.
OK issue one
I wish to create a frame with border + image say half A5 size and within that frame I wish to create another frame in the lower left corner to which I would like to put a folio (page number), but I would like the half frame to follow the contours around the inserted frame in order to leave the folio isolated.
I hope this makes sense.
If this sounds so basic to you all then I apologise but hey guys this grandad is trying to get with this technology
Thanks for at least looking
Johnnie

Sorry, I don't quite follow what you're trying to do. If you could post a screen shot of your problem that would help a lot.

I think I understand. You want a box with a (black?) border which has an image. You want a text element in the bottom left corner, on a (white?) background. You want the border of the image box to go along the top right of the text element's box, where it would normally go round the bottom left. Is that right?

You could try the following.

Create the image box. Add a border in the Stroke menu. Let's say 1pt but you could choose whatever you like. Choose align stroke to inside. Choose Black from the Swatches menu.

Make a new box for the text. Instead of putting text in it, add another 1pt width and height and make the whole box black.

Now make another box which you really will use for the text. Make it white and put the text in, indented or centred or whatever.

Now line up all the boxes by their bottom left corners.

Thank you Dougal
I will have a go at this it seems what I need

thank you also Eugenetyson I have tried (sort of) to upload my image but I will try again later in the meantime I will try what Dougal suggests
I will get back here later
thanks guys you are being a great help to me and I really appreciate it
Johnnie

Hi Guys
I apologise for being your worse nightmare,I have been trying all afternoon to make Dougals suggestion work and I am sure it is right but I am afraid it must be me,I am so new to indesign that I am not yet beyond the basics.
I will try and get my image sorted in the meantime my son has just arrived 42 and I have not seen him for a while so I am afraid it is all hands to the bottle.sorry about this back Saturday

Hi Eugentyson
80112698452083 pickup code

I really don't know where I am going with this but does the above mean anything to you this is what I ended up with on the last link which is FILE EXCHANGE you suggested when I loaded my image

Hehe No not too hard (but hard enough)

OK you advised that I go to the last link, the 5 links are image, url, video, multiploader and file exchange.

I went to file exchange browsed my image etc and the pickup code number is what I was given which I assumed is what takes whoever to my file but I am obviously wrong which is unfortunate for me

So apart from having a problem with my programme I now have a problem uploading images.

I will try and upload again but if not successful can I email it to you??
Thanks for caring Johnnie

Hi Guys
With Eugenetyson's help hopefully I am now there with this image with multiple choices it is always! have I picked the right one?
imageshack works a little different than the one I usually use but I am always willing to learn
As you can see I am still trying to get the upload right

Ah I see what you mean. Ok, you just need to grab the white arrow tool and select those two lines individually and press delete.

You can set up automatic page numbering on the master page. If you don't already know.

You do what you've done there. Then go to Window>Pages and you will see a panel for your pages. There is a dividing line. The top division is where your master pages are.

Select the Master "A" or if you've created another master then use that one.

Then do what you've done there and inside the small box that you've removed the lines, simply go to Text>Insert Special Character>Markers>Current Page Number

If you don't want text to interfere with this:

View>Show Frame Edges (this will but a blue box around your text to show the frame edges they don't print, but you will see why it's necessary in a minute)
Select the box using the Black Arrow.
Windows Text Wrap and select the icon with the two lines above and below the square, I think it's the fourth Icon there. Increase the size of the Wrap. You will see a thin blue line move away from the box. This indicates that no text may pass. Quite cool.

Next you don't want an image to interfere with your page number right, but you want your page number to be still seen.

So you with the box still selected,

Window>Swatches

Choose a colour (i'm going to use white here for simplicity)

Now that you have that selected you can see that the numbering is going to be right up against the white box.

You don't want that, so center your text in the box by selecting it and centering, you should see the icon on the control panel at the top.

Next you want to center it vertically, so it's not at the top of the box hitting the line.

Switch to your black arrow and select the box. Now on the control panel at the top you will see three boxes, one represents text at the top, one represents text in the middle and one represents text at the bottom.

Choose the text in the Middle. Now, it's aligned the text to the center of the box vertically.

Finally if you want the text box to remain white (for example) but you still want to see the image behind it, then you can choose to make the box transparent and not the text.

With the box selected, go to, Window>Effects select the Fill from the list and reduce the opacity to about 70% or whatever your heart desires.

Then increase the size until you're happy with the distance.

Now every time you insert a page and choose that master page the folio will be automatically inserted.

Hi Eugenetyson
Wow that is what I call help bigtime thank you very much I now know where to post my questions,I can now upload my images and confidently know that I will receive an answer.
I am printing your last post so I can use it just like a tutorial.
My biggest problem as always is knowing what everything means in the drop downs
I know only too well that I am going all around the houses to achieve any results in my attempts to produce this magazine albeit a local village monthly with a circulation of 400 copies but I am prepared to work at it.
Johnnie

No problem at all. There is an easier way you could do it using tables, but that's another story. Better not getting too complex too soon.

Every so often I open a file that I did maybe a year ago and think to myself, "Why did I do that, there's a better way to do it". So you'll learn as you go along, and you take most tips and use them with something else.

Any more questions don't be afraid to ask! :D

Thank you
now you have me wondering Hmmm tables I wonder how that works??? but as you say hopefully I will find out in time so one step at a time.
I was sitting here earlier thinking about the first time I had a PC and I used to say to myself pulling my hair out trying and getting click happy about
I WONDER HOW THEY DO THAT

Hi in this post, I learned about a trick Eugenetyson said about taking the white arrow and erasing sides by choosing the white arrow......."Ok, you just need to grab the white arrow tool and select those two lines individually and press delete".

Ok. I can get one line to delete, but when I try to choose other side (made sure white arrow active)....it will choose the rest of the other 3 lines.

so what did i miss/

Nikky

When you press delete you will see the four corner points fill in blue. These are anchor points. An anchor point is like a stanchion (where one horizontal line meets another to form a corner) when you delete the line it automatically selects all the corner points. You can see the anchor points fill in meaning they are selected. Simply deselect the square by clicky away from it and click the line you want to delete.

For me personally this thread gets more fascinating as it grows and I have learnt loads over the weekend.
I was wondering if once you have a frame, text or image can you nudge it left or right or up or down as you can in publisher.

Are you talking about on a master page or just a regular text box on the page?

You can move the master page item, but you basically break the link to the master page. It's a combination of ALT SHIFT CTRL and Click, I can't remember which at the moment.

If it's just a regualr text box or image box then you can move it anywhere you like, using the arrow keys or dragging with the mouse. Or using the control panel at the top and moving the X and Y co-ordinates.
