Newbie- What purpose does the database serve in Lotus Notes

Newbie here. Understand, I think, from reading some of the forum responses that Lotus Notes is mainly a GroupWare application that is supported by a database. It's mail function is secondary. So, my question is What purpose does this database serve? Is it just the INTEGRATION feature that makes it popular vs. using individual applications like Excel, Access, etc. to do the same thing.

What do most companies use Lotus Notes for? Does it stand by itself or do I need a backend server like Domino to make the integration/database work?

I have Release 5 on my Win2kpro computer and mainly using it to establish mail, calendaring, task accounting. I have a few problems with it but I think it's because I don't understand it. What's a good source to learn it.

Lotus Notes is your Client. Domino is the server holding all the info. Each computer has Lotus Notes connecting to the Domino Server to view and do other e-mail tasks. You can also hook up things like Outlook to the Domino server to retrieve your e-mails. Domino server can also publish intranet and internet sites. We use domino with Lotus to track customer support tickets and also as a way for submitting internal support problems or requests.

And I just find it is quite simple to use Domino server to share with officemates.

For example, I have something (like a Notes documents library) to share with officemates, the db is on local and is updated everay day, so I just set a replica on server and send people the link to the db, and they can see it most updated. ----------------------------------------
