I just installed SQL 2000 Ent. and imported a database to it. My question is how does my clients access the database on the SQL server? Do I have to build a custom app or a webpage, or are is there a client that will work with it other than Access?

Thanks

You could install the client utilities for SQL Server on their machine. This would give them Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer to work with your newly created DB. You can also prohibit various client tools during setup by unchecking various components. Just use your SQL Server install disc and the client utilities are in most cases presented by default if the system being installed on is not running server software. In most cases, your client falls under this category. If they are on a server by change, just choose the client tool option instead of the full blown install.

Thanks

Will this allow them to update the data that is in the database?

yes ... if you wish them to. You could prevent this by creating roles and tightening security.

Thanks

with Query Analyzer don't you have to know the proper syntax inorder to input data.

Yes, but no matter what 'front-end' application you use to input commands - SOMEONE needs to know the proper syntax and how to write the program.

I think you neeed a custom built drag and drop application to connect to your server there are loads of free downloads availbale most built in Vb/ ASP (web use only) . This will give your users a front end but also limit them.....In think in order to set this up u will need to set up the ODBC connection...
have a look in google.

" SQl server client front ends" ror Sql server admin clients"
