As the IT Technician for my company I have been asked to implement sharepoint services. I have done some research but cannot determine where to start. My question is does anyone have an outline of what I need to get started.

We are running windows 2000 server version 5.00.2195 SP4 with sql server 2000 v8.00.760 SP3. My plan is do be able to have forums for our project teams, files to share, intranet for the company, and some possible websites for our outside salespeople to use.

Is this service Free or not.
Thanks

Hello!

Windows SharePoint Services, a component for Windows Server 2003, is included with the server and, in a way, free. Windows SharePoint Portal, a larger scale portal solution, is an additional product and can be quite expensive depending on your organization and rollout side. In both cases, SQL Server 2000 is just fine with the latest service pack.

You can see the differences here:

Finally, a quick walk-through on a single-server deployment of WSS:

Let me know if there's a more specific topic you're looking for and I'll try to provide you with that information and/or links.

Thanks!

If you don't want to upgrade to Windows 2003 you can run the original version of sharepoint (sharepoint 1.0 or sharepoint team services). It is on the frontpage CD starting with frontpage 2002 I believe. It worked well for me.

Great! so I can deploy sharepoint 1.0 on my windows 2000 server by getting it free from the frontpage CD. No monthly or yearly services charges? Also did you run into any conflicts or problems when deploying that you can make me aware of so I can avoid. Also what is the difference between sharepoint 1.0 and the latest version out.

Also I have a windows 2003 server but at a remote location with remote access to. If I decide to use w3k instead of w2k do I have to download sharepoint 1.0 or is it already somewhere in the computer by default.

I want to be able to test sharepoint services without any conflicts to the server functionality to our network.

I have a simple webpage to look up info from a database. Can I put this webpage within the sharepoint services for our mobile users to access.

Thanks for you help

My knowledge of STS 1.0 is as close to nil as it comes; however, if it is available on the FP2002 CD and you already have this CD, then you won't have any monthly or yearly service charges outside your existing Internet/Intranet hosting costs (e.g. if you pay for a domain registration, etc).

There is a FAQ if you want to install STS 1.0 on Windows 2003 Server located at
Also, if STS 1.0 is similar to it's predecessor, you can place your existing web page into the site and "exclude" it from SharePoint (allowing .asp, .aspx pages to work) using the SharePoint Configuration menu. Someone more familiar with STS 1.0 can fill in the gaps on that part.

Good luck!

David

Deployment Guide

It is not a separate download. It does come on the frontpage 2002 CD...so you'll need to purchase a copy of that if you don't already own it. The link to the deployment guide above indicates this...

The quickest way to embed a page is using inline frames. However, depending on your needs this may not be the way to go.

Also note: The user's of the site will need microsoft office applications to take full advantage of all the features.

On a related note, where is the nitty gritty info on how and where doc libs are created and stored?

Should be in the administrator's guide in the first link of the last post.

In STS 1.0 the libs are stored in the DB - the actual files that are uploaded are stored as individual files on disk.

In the latest version (Windows Sharepoint Services)...everything is stored in the database.

Is their any other programs that can do the same as sharepoint services so I can look into this aswell.

There are many solutions besides SharePoint that you can consider depending on your specific needs and, frankly, how much time you want to dedicate to exploring the thousands of possibilities.

Products such as PHP-Nuke work great for organizations that do not need a lot of the Office integration and document management provided by SharePoint--strictly an information/web portal.

One of the best lists of "up to the moment" content/portal management systems can be found on Wikipedia's CMS entry:
