I am supposed to be configuring a 1601. I haev the E0 sorted but does the serial use an IP that I get from my ISP or is it one that the ISP has given to us in our internet range - or is it an IP of equipment on the other end of the equipment?

I'm assuming you're connecting to your ISP through your S0 interface here. Your ISP probably gave you an IP address to use. That is what you configure. Never duplicate an IP address without using NAT!!! Hope that helped :)
