I am creating a Word 2000 template in which I want to create a custom userbox. In the userbox I want a field where the user can either type in text (their boss's name) or have their own name be automatically put in. In WordPerfect, I used a text file which was located in a folder on the C: drive, and I used file insert code to automatically put the user's name in, but I don't know how to do this in Word. Can someone please give me some sample code. Thanks.

Could you please be more specific? What exactly do you mean by a userbox?

Are you talking about something as easy as AutoText - please look up Help on that. it may be what you are asking about.

Are you talking about getting the name from the system, like a login name?

Are you talking about reading from a plain text file? Do you want it type in and locked, so the user can not change it?

Have you tried using the macro recorder?

When I say userbox, I am referring to a dialog box with several prompts in which the user types information that will be inserted into the form.

I could be talking about auto text, but I don't know enough about autotext to know for sure, because I want the user to have the option of having his own name be placed at a certain bookmark, or being able to type someone else's name in.

I do not want the system name, because our system name is the last name and first name initial. I need the entire name: first name, middle initial, last name.

I haven't used the macro recorder, because that doesn't work for this situation.

Thanks for responding.

Pulling the information from a plain text fine would work. It wouldn't be necessary to have it locked.

Hi prirod,

Would an 'Author' or 'Username' field suffice (see Insert|Field)? Provided each user sets their workstation up with this information, it can be included in every document based on a given template. If, in a particular case, another name is needed, simply select the field and overtype it.

Alternatively/additionally, if the template is set up with the boss's name in the 'manager' field (see File|Properties), you could have that appear, courtesy of see Insert|Field|DocProperty|Options|Manager>add).

If you use both, then users could simply delete whichever field(s) they don't want.

Cheers
