Hi everyone! I've looked thru the past 5 pages of threads here and I haven't seen this asked recently, so here it is -
Can I use Dreamweaver 4 as my exclusive HTML editor, or should I load up Homesite and work with it as well?

I'm a VB/database programmer who's learning ASP and HTML, and now I want to get into Web development, both for my job and because I find it really interesting. Our webmaster has told me they use Dreamweaver and have stopped using Homesite, and I'd like to have to learn 1 less new program if possible, but is Homesite included because it's VITAL, or just because Macromedia bought it and is protecting it's investment? Thanks in advance, as any input would be much appreciated.

Dreamweaver 4.0 is a visual editor.
Homesite on the ohter hand is for hand coders.

Dreamweaver MX the most recent editor from Macromedia have merged Dreamweaver 4.0, Ultradev 4.0 and Homesite to provide all its users with one solution for their web editing needs.

It depends if you want to use a pure editor or a visual editor as your choice of editor for web development.

Thanks ranjan, that helps quite a bit. Would I be correct in assuming I could set up a page in Dreamweaver, tweak the HTML from the Dreamweaver IDE where needed, and even start coding an ASP page from scratch in Dreamweaver - all without ever opening another program and without losing any real functionality? And would it also be safe to say that if I'm only going to use DHTML, VBScript and JavaScript that I really don't need Dreamweaver MX, UltraDev and/or ColdFusion?

Thanks again, and by the way the tutorial on the link you provided is excellent. Congrats.

Ultradev and MX have built in routines (asp server behaviors) that put in standard code, for eg. recordsets, etc just like dreamweaver 4 has built in routines for dhtml and javascript (objects, commands and behaviours) like rollover images, etc.

You could hand code all your HTML, ASP, Javascript, DHTML and CSS in codeview in Dreamweaver 4.0 without using these prebuilt routines. Its for you to choose how you want to use dreamweaver. Ranjan
