It maybe that im just really stupid...but anyway...
I have two subsites that I would like to restrict access to... users of Site1 do not have Access to Site2... so I created two sitegroups... Site1view (can view) and site2view(can view)...and gave removed all permissions but those from each of the subsites... ok fine...now each group can only see the sites they are allowed to get to... here comes my problem...

On each site I have set it up so its like a home page for that section... Only certain people can add content ... others can only view (no problem).. but I would like everyone to have permission to add content further down the ladder ... at subsites I would like to give others access to contribute content...but not give them the ablitity to write content to the home page of that site...

If I do what i did before and now create a new group...this seems tedious and wrong...

please help... (hope this makes sense)

So lets see if I can clean the mess I posted up...

I would like Managers to each have a section they can write too...but they can not write to other sections...this can be a seperate page or just a list item on a page... not quite sure how to set the security on this.

It sounds like you are on the right track by creating groups, and restricting access based on those groups.

Unfortunately you can't have per-item permissions in WSS without a custom solution. However, you could grant/remove access to the groups to another sub-site, or a document library/list in that site.

If you could rephrase the question / draw a picture of what you'd like the structure to look like, I may be able to help more :)

I cant draw so I will try to describe this...

Top level page is will be a home page that will ahve data for others to view/read... only a few people will have the ability to add content.

Under that I have two pages... Intranet and Extranet (we decided not to break this out into two servers as we work at a college and most of our external parnters are semi internal)... saying that... most extranet viewers will not have access to the intranet... on this these there will be a contenter person or two that will be responsible for the overall news for that section and pertnit documents etc...

Under the extranet we have three areas... again home pages for their sections... one will be Departments...we will have someone responsible for writing content here....

Under Departments we have several areas...each department will have their own space... here someone from each department will add content etc....

under this who knows...but there will be other areas..

I am trying to move this out so that I have as much control as possible...and limit content addition to a few..but as I get down further into the tree all users will have write access (message boards etc)... trying to figure out how to make it so they can have write access deep in the tree..but none at the top.

hope this helps... and thanks
