I'm new to networking but if someone can guide me in the right direction it would be very helpful. I am a small business owner, I have a cisco 2620 router im going to set up a vpn my other office. we currently have a T1 line connected through a satellite. we are in a area that doesn't have a hard line for internet access. we currently have 3 IP addresses through our provider. My question is..with cisco..were do i place the cisco router? do i place it behind the satellite modem like all the others routers? or do i some how connect the satellite to it? im a little confused about the dsu/csu card? what is the purpose of it and what does it do?

sry this is a newbie question but im confused about this concept.

Well, in my experience, you would connect the satellite to the 2620. Just like if you were to have a T1 coming directly into a smart-jack, then you would connect the smart-jack to the 2620 via a T1 cable (pairs 1,2 & 4,5).

If your T1 terminates into the satellite modem, or whatever device that you have, then just connect the modem to the router.

Hope this helps.

sanchez71,

Word of caution with VPN over Satelite. VPN is very latency sensitive and may have problems with keeping the tunnels stabilized. Otherwise the directions waresd gave should work.
