Hi

We have recently purchased a 2nd hand Cisco 801 Router/Firewall but I am experiencing many problems configuring it.

Our current setup uses a Netgear ISDN Router (RT338) with a software Eval CheckPoint Firewall. However we have decided to use an all in one hardware firewall/router instead.

The Cisco 801 has the following IOS: 12.1 (2)T

I have reset the Router and can gain access to it using a console cable.

When I run through the FastSetup I do the following:
(NB I am attempting this with just the ISDN cable connected and the console cable. i.e. I have not connected the ISDN cable to my hub/switch)

1. Connect to an unlisted service provider or corporate network
2. I have tried creating a file for the router and tried adding a new router....I have problems with both.
If I select Add a Router.....it discovers the router..
3. Remote Connection Type: Direct to an ISP
4. Enter the two phone numbers supplied by my ISP (Demon). These work fine with my current setup!
5. PPP User name and password: Enter login details supplied by my ISP. Again, This works fine with my current setup!
I left Central Router blank as I do not know this.
6. It then tests the Interface Connection..

But I just get the message:

Cannot make an ISDN Call
1. Verify the red or orange ISDN cable is connected
2. Turn the router off and on to reboot the router. Wait 3 minutes. and try again.

If the problem continues, contact your ISDN provider and ask to have the line tested.

I tried point 2 but this made no difference!

The Router did not come with a red or orange ISDN cable, I am using the cable supplied with my Netgear Router....could this be the problem.

There is nothing wrong with the settings as these work fine with my current setup!

Any ideas anyone...please?

If I attempt to create a configuration file using the Setup test wizard I also have problems.

I select the following:

Router Model: C801
IOS Options: Firewall and NAT (didn't check the others).
Connect Direct to ISP: Entered phone numbers and login details provided by my ISP (as mentioned before)

- IP address Range given by my ISP: 193.xxx.xxx.225 - 193.xxx.xxx.238
- WAN IP Address and Mask: Selected Automatically Discover
- Next Connection: Selected no there are no other remote conections to setup.
- Internet Servers: Yes there is a web mail server you want to publish to the internet.
- Internet Server Type Selection: Single Server (web and mail)
- Internet Servers IP address given by ISP: 193.xxx.xxx.237
- Local Internet Servers: 193.xxx.xxx.237 (I currently have this setup with my firewall routing this IP request to my actual private address for the mail/web server 192.168.2.11)
- Router Security: Entered a name and passwords
- Cost Control Settings: Left as default
- LAN IP address and Mask: 193.xxx.xxx.225/255.255.255.240 (as suggested by my ISP, - I have been using my existing router with these settings!)

I then save a copy of the file and attempt to configure the router using this.

It then configures the router. During this time it displays the following:
Router Found. Setting to factory defaults.
Set to factory defaults.
Router Ok
Checking IOS version
IOS version OK
Checking the IOS features

It then ends and the following message is displayed:

Verify File format
The specified file is not in the correct format to initialize the router. Etc.

Any ideas please?

This should be a very simple setup.

I am using an ISDN connection to connect to the web through my ISP. There are no other networks involved.

I have approximately 15 PC’s to connect to the web through this CISCO router.

Just attempt to run through the fast setup again. This time without using a config file.

It starts to test the connection with the following info displayed during the testing process:
Verifying Phone Numbers
Verifying ISDN Connection
Verifying User Name and Password

It then stops with the following screen:

ISDN Settings.

Select Auto-Detect... or specify the switch type and SPIDs

Verify the Switch Type
Verify that your switch type is set correctly. Click Next to test the ISDN Line.

If it fails a second time, contact your ISDN service provider.

The only field that can be changed is Switch Type but there is only one option in the drop down list: NET 3 (European Standard)

Not sure what this is all about.

It runs the test again and fails.

Please HELP!!!

Thanks
