Forgive my ignorance - as I hear it's quite simple (and I have no documentation) - to load a PowerMac from scratch (I'm putting in a new hard drive that has no OS on it ), I have the Mac OS cd - is that all I need ..? I've heard of a startup disk - what's this for ..?

yes - I know that's a "new" not a "need" hard drive

Put the disk in the cd player and boot while holding down the "c" key. This boots on the cd. You will see a background wallpaper composed of a bunch of little cds if it worked ok. When prompted tell it you want to do a new or "clean" install and direct it to the proper drive. No startup disk is necessary if you have a pretty recent OS.

Good luck!

thanks I have'nt had a chance yet - but will give it a try
