I would like to learn about routers so I purchased one on e-bay(a 2514). I created a rollup cable for it. I have connected from my PC's ethernet card to the console port on the router. I've opened hyperterminal but I'm not
sure what settings to use. Can anyone please help out a newbie?

I am familiar with servers, pc's etc but I need to master routers quickly and I don't have the time to take the class and there is no tuition reimbursement.

Thanks!

The console port is a serial port not an ethernet port. Connect from the console port to your Com1 and use hyperterm with the default settings to that port except for a speed of 9600.

Thanks for your quick response - I was guessing at how to connect from this
So I would need to buy an adapter to connect the DB9 from my serial to the RJ45 on the console port? Do you know if this document is correct about the rollup cable between the db9 adapter and the console port?

Thank you.

Hey -

You need a DB9 to RJ45 adapter. Your easiest bet is to find a friend who works with a lot of routers - we always have tons of them. Or maybe they have a console cable (DB9 to RJ45 on one cable)

Then to connect, you go from Com1 to console and use Hyperterminal with the following settings: 9600 baud, 8 data bits, NO parity, 1 Stop bits.

Thanks for the replies. I'm trying to find a place online to order the DB9 to RJ45 adapter. Cisco dealers charge an absurd amount for these.

I found a db9torj45 adapter last night. After connecting to the router, I found out I have very little memory on my old 2514 so I'll be ordering some today so that I can put a more recent ios on it.

Thanks for the help.
