We need help setting up a DR solution for our Symantec Antivirus Ver 10 server

Our current setup is the Production Server is downloading updates from the Web and deploying them to clients in the normal manner

Our plan for the DR site is to setup a secondary server , which will recieve its updates from Production and deploy them to all the clients in the DR site

In the event of a DR we want the secondary server to assume the primary role

During testing we discovered when the Primary server went offline, it took all of its client members with it. (could no longer see them under the primary servers list)

Symantec’s solution says to promote the secondary (which we did), and to re-establish connectivity to the clients , copy a grc.dat to all the client members?

We have a few thoudand clients so this is not the turn key solution we are looking for and are wondering if we are missing anything or perhaps there is a better approach to providing a DR solution.

Any help appreicated

Cheers

Setup a second server in the same group, then enable client roaming. If you set it to Load Balance and provide the two server names in the boxes all the clients will automatically switch to the least busy server. If one server goes down then they will all move to the other server until it comes back up. This setup has worked well for all the networks I manage.

Thanks for your response Gosemer

Can i assume the load balancing you are referring to is Windows NLB ?

We want to locate our secondary server in the DR site , and there is only a small pipe , which is already replicating other apps

Is there a process we can follow ?

Cheers

In the Symantec console right click on your server group
then choose "ALL TASKS" then "SYMANTEC ANTIVIRUS" then "CLIENT ROAMING" the options I was talking about are there.

good info there gosemer. I didn't even know that...STAR for you

Also you need the "SAVRoam" "Symantec AntiVirus Roaming Service" to be set to automatic. Once you enable this service and the client Roaming it will not take affect untill the clients reboot.
