I'm new to OpenBSD and am looking form some advice. I am building a lab machine on my home network to run as a master DNS server, DHCP, firewall, and gateway.

When installing OpenBSD what do you enter as the DNS server? 127.0.0.1? I realize you can change it later.

For BIND should I download the latest and greatest? Is there a front end tool for me to set up my zones.

Sorry if my newbiness is irritating. You may flame me now if you care...

Thanks,
Randall.

Randall,

I would use the BIND included with OpenBSD, depending on which version you're running.

Next, assuming you are connecting this machine to some sort of Internet connection (DSL/Cable/etc...)then, I would use the DNS server IP address provided to you by your ISP instead of 127.0.0.1. That way, you will be able to contact remote sites using names, such as ftp.openbsd.org, and as you said, you can change it later, once you have the DNS server functioning properly.

Also, before worrying about a front-end, I would get the DNS working; providing internal hosts with global DNS information, as well as any records for domains you are responsible for/wish to host. There are the reverse lookups as well.

What version of OpenBSD are you running? What kind of Internet connection do you have? Let me know if I can help.

Dear Roberto:

Sorry for the delay.

I am running V3.4. I use DSL as the gateway. I am using this PC as a lab box study tool.

Can OpenBSD do DDNS? I plan to use this box for 1 to 1 and 1 to many NAT, & PF.

I am going through the Lucas book ( ISBN 1-886411-99-9 ), chapter by chapter. I'll write again if I have any questions.

Hi Randall,

Excuse my delay - yes you can run all those items on one box (for your small office/home office - or otherwise small network).

If you wanted to try another DNS system, a newer, more robust and solid DNS system, check out: - he writes QMail and several other extremely useful programs. Check out the home page too.
