Hello,

I just installed linux for the first time, after the GUI install it reboots everything passes, but it does not put me in to the GUI screen I just get a command prompt I.e s10367 login: I put in root and enter my password, but I am not sure how to get to the gui side of things. I installed the xwindow support during the install as well.

Thanks Ahead

If you want to simply get the GUI going after logging in, the command you're looking for is "startx".

If you want your system to start the GUI at boot (with a graphic login screen, etc), then you need to change Linux's default runlevel. The stock default runlevel is 3, which is the text login. If you change the default to 5, then Linux will start Xwindow at boot.

To change your default runlevel, edit (as root) /etc/inittab

Near the top of that file, you will find a line which likely reads:

id:3:initdefault:

Change that to read:

id:5:initdefault:

When next you boot your system, Xwindow will run at boot. Want the best answers? Ask the best questions: TANSTAAFL!
