Newbie: Kernel Source for Fedora 4 / Recompile / NDISWRAPPER

Hi everyone,

I'm a WinNT admin so please bare with me - newbie to Linux.

I'm trying to get a a 3COM OfficeConnect 802.11g USB Adapter (3CRWE254G72) to work on my Fedora 4 Linux box. (HP NetServer e800 - using it as a desktop for now though)
Problem is that 3COM don't do drivers for Linux on this model.

I've read about NDISWRAPPER, which look interesting; however I don't know enough about the basics to get started in using it. The most major problem is that I don't have the kernel source files on my machine, and I don't know where to find them. (Can't find any RPM on the CD's)

Also, does anyone know a good newbie website for Linux, (Got the Linux Newbie Admin Guide already thanks) and also a good newbie starter to NDISWRAPPER?

well, I'm not a big fan of red hat's products, but here is a good start:

start the software installation tool
type kernel in the search box
select the sources from the search results
install.

they actually may be installed already, check under:
/usr/src/linux

that is where they generally are installed.
publicly readable folders, but root writable only.

to rebuild the kernal may not actually be needed.
build the ndiswrapper, then run insmod with ndiswrapper installed
you will have to edit the init scripts to add the ndiswrapper module to insmod settings.

if you do have to rebuild the kernel completely, I recommend you copy the entire kernel sources to your home folder ( not root ) and do the rebuilding until install as non priveledged user.
use su to become root, then do the make install
this keeps the source tree from possibly getting corrupted.


Being pro-*x and anti-MicroSoft is fine, but there may be a better time and place to wear your "I'd rather die than deal with MS" t-shirt than at a support group for people with multiple sclerosis.
