Hi, my kids have screwed up a jpg photo on the computer. when i view the pic as a thumbnail, it is fine but when i open it fullscreen it looks like they have used the spray can or a paintbrush on it. what have they done and how can i reverse it? I am experimenting with gimp but i have little experience of image manipulation

There's nothing you can do, at least not easily. You could try using various filters to see if you can make improvements, but you will never retrieve lost information.

if i view this pic as a thumbnail, it is perfect. it is only when i view the pic full screen it is changed. as such, it seems that information has not been lost, but the pic must change when viewed in a different way...any ideas anybody??

The thumbnails are not generated on-the-fly but are stored on disk. That's why your thumbnail looks ok, since it was generated from your picture before it got messed up.

You could try the resynthesizer plug-in ( but it won't be easy.
