I work in a CO. We got a hold a bunch of Cisco routers. We generally work with the Voice side of Telecom. We use Procom plus and Telnet. We want to just get into the interface with the router via the console port. Is this possible? If so what is the setup?

Hi !

It is possible to access the console port. You need a "rollover" cable from Cisco (or you can make one). The cable is usualy included in the box - look for a blue cable.

When you setup a ProComm connection make sure that you connect via the Com port connect via the cable to the router's console port.

I normaly use hyperterminal to connect to the routers. I think the normal settings are
Baud rate: 9600
Databit: 8
Parity: none
Stop bit: 1
Flow controll: Hardware

If i do not remember correctly, just look in the manual ;-)

I hope this helps

Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little more effort.

You need a rollover cable aka null-modem cable (with RJ-45 on one end and db-9 on the other). Terminal programs: TeraTerm Pro or HyperTerminal Private Edition or Putty or whatever you use. Settings: 9600, 8, N, 1 No Flowcontrol.

When connected to the router console port you'll see messages as the device boots. You may have to press the Enter key a couple times if you're not receiving output.
