I have a cable modem at home and have just purchased a D-Link DI-514 router. My wife makes a VPN connection to her work using a Cisco VPN client (not sure of the version). The computer she is connecting from is hard wired to the cable modem via Cat 5e cable. I want to use my work laptop to connect to my work wirelessly through VPN. I have a Nortel VPN client V04_91.021. Will I be able to set things up (using the new router) so that both my wife and I will be able to connect to our respective works at the same time. Please use simple english in response. I am very new to this. Both of our computers are running Windows 2000.

Thanks much!

I have similar problem relating to VPN. Two of our users are using one DSL line at the same time. But just one of them can connect with VPN client. When the second user wants to connect to VPN, the first must disconnect.
How to solve an issue? Is it possible that both of them use VPN at the same time? Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance

The vpn connections you are using, do they use IPSec?

Most router support IPSec passthrough, but only one at a time.

To make multiple simultaneous IPSec connections possible, all hardware must support encapsulation and transfer through port 4400, i believe. I am not completely up to date with this technique and don't know the exact name for this technique.

It may be better in this case to use PPTP connections through port TCP 1723, and use 128 bit encryption, it's also pretty safe. And multiple simultaneous connections are possible.

How can I set up that I use PPTP connections for VPN?

Thanks

1. WHich OS are you using
2. What VPN server are you using.

answer these two questions, and i can give you an answer.

1. Windows XP
2. Windows 2000 VPN Server

pmf71, thanks for your help

in windows XP it's simple...create a new dial-up connection from network connections properties, then choose "connect to the network at my workplace", then"virtual private connection", then give you connection a name, choose "do not dial an initial connection", enter the public IP address of your vpn server, then choose your or anyone's use, finish.

The windows 2000 vpn server is configured through routing and remote access. Make sure that a couple of pptp ports are available, and in the server properties, under tab "security" click on athentication methods and check ms-chapv2 and ms-chap. also, under IP, check IP routing, and configure a static address pool for clients.

this is how my vpn server is configured. Make sure your firewall forwards/maps tcp port 1723 to your vpn server.

Come to think of it, your problem might be caused by the fact there is only ONE pptp port configured. In routing and remote access, first check the number of pptp ports that are available. right click on ports -> porperties, and double click PPTP WAN miniport. Set the number of ports to at least 5.
