sorry if this "remedial" but I'm up and running and wanted to create link to an MS Word document. I have a test.txt file same folder same href link in HTML but I get a "You don't have permission to access /miscFiles/test.doc on this server" message. I've checked the permission on the folder and file and they good and match the text file in the same dir. This is an unmolested httpd config from Fedora Core 3 install. Am I missing some MIME Type in there ?? Thanks for any help.

not sure if this is the same..
and I'm a complete unix file system retard and a big cheater I'm using Gnome
but I found /etc/mime.types and it does have crap load of mime/type stuff and 'application/msword doc' is in there? Any other ideas? or is mime.types not in the correct place?? like I said this was an auto install.. and I know that sometimes stuff gets put in odd(wrong) places.
Thanks again.

I had have a similar problem, a feew months ago.
After a whole day, I have realised one thing:

If the owner of the link is not the same with the owner of the target file , apache will serve you a 403 page (Forbiden).

So, check if the owner of the target file is the same with the owner of the link.
Check also if the rigths are OK (+r, +x) in the parent directories.

Allso, check if the directive:
Options +FollowSymLinks
is present in httpd.conf

Ok, well that is almost as retarded as I am.
The doc file was created on a different machine (hence different owner, I suppose)
picked up via email from the serving machine
created link on server machine
created new dir on server machine
placed dnld doc file in new dir
= 403
then
copy and pasted doc file on server machine
removed orginal
renamed new (pasted) to match link ref
= viola

seems kinda silly that since I dnld as a user on server box that is wasn't the same owner.. Is there a better way??

Thanks for the help.
