I'm a newbie at BE and have ver. 8.6. I have a Dell 120T autoloader that has 7 tapes plus the cleaner. I replaced the tapes and now it I get alerts stating the media is unrecognized. What to do?
When loading tapes into a library there are certain steps to follow:
1. use the Import command, do not manually load the tapes
(right click on the slot and select import)
2. once the tapes are loaded, they must be inventoried (right click on the slot and select Inventory)
3. SOMETIMES, the tape(s) need to be labeled. If the tape shows up as unrecognized media, bad media or something else and you have done steps 1 & 2 right click on the slot and select Label. WARNING: This will erase the tape.
I am quite the novice at BE. I was recently hired by this company and have never worked with BE before. I have gone into the Device Tab and right clicked on my device named Dell 2. There is no option to Import. Is it located somewhere else? Please give me detailed instructions. Thank you!
You have an autoloader so you can't import into the DEVICE. You need to import into the SLOT. On the device tab find "Robotic Library". Expand that and you should see "Slots". Click on that and you should see a list of the slots in the right window pane. Right click on the slot that you want to put the tape into. Select Import. You will see an alert requesting you to insert the media. Open the 'maibox door' on the tape library and insert your tape. Click OK to the alert and BE will move the tape to the proper slot.
Here is what I did. I ejected the 7 tape cassette from the autoloader. Then I right clicked on the Slot 1 and clicked Import. It came up with the alert requesting insert media. I inserted my 7 tape cassette and clicked ok. It began going through the tapes. When it was finished Activity Monitor stated the Imported complete 0% for 6 of the tapes and the job logs stated complete. However for 1 tape it said 100% complete and in the job log it states Slot 1 is empty.
Then, I attempted to Inventory the tapes. On the first tape, I got an alert. Unfortunatly, I dismissed the error without taking note. It said something about the device and it was going to take it offline. Now, my device is offline and I cannot find a way to bring it back online.
Stop BE services
Reboot the library
Right click on My Computer, select Manage, click on Device Manager.
Look for Tape Devices.
If it's not there use the Add/Remove Hardware to find it.
If it is there, restart BE services.
If you can't find it using Add/Remove Hardware, reboot the server.
OK. I ended up having to reboot the server and the Device came back on-line. I decided to run Inventory and with every tape (The tapes are brand new from Dell and to spec.) I get a Critical Device error. The tape is damaged or drive is faulty. Call tape supplier help line. I also got the following error: Tape could not write its system information correctly to the drive. I'll double check with Dell to make sure they sent the correct tapes. Any other ideas?
The connections are good. Before I attempted to erase, I noted that each fo the 7 slots were labeled either bad media or blank media. I attempted to erase and after click through the ok's it gave me several alerts stating cyclic redudancy errors for each slot.
FYI, this drive was previously setup as a stand-alone drive but, was a pain to admin as it would not auto-cycle through the tapes. Hope this gives you some insight.
1. I had to reboot the server and when it came back up I received the following error:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Removable Storage Service
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1
Date: 10/14/2004
Time: 7:33:03 AM
User: N/A
Computer: OFFICESERVER
Description:
Unable to auto-configure library unit Changer0. The current setup of the library unit does not support automatic configuration. You will either have to modify the current setup of the library to adhere to automatic configuration guidelines (if possible) or manually configure the device.
The device is connected and is found when booting up and windows sees it in the backup devices screen. Normally when I reboot, the changer looks at all the tapes. This time it did not.
2. When I try to Inventory the slot, it says it's running but nothing is happening. I cancelled the operation after 2 hours.
Also, after I Inventory "tape 1" to slot one, I get 100% but in the log, it stated the slot was empty.
So, I tried going to Slot 2. It stated it had blank media. I attempted to lable this media and it stated 100% but, when I looked in the log, it stated Slot empty and then when I looked at the Media, it stated it was empty.
I have all 7 tapes (+1 cleaning tape)in this auto loader all inserted properly.
