New Wireless Newtork

Hi, Im just starting to set up a home network, I have a wireless laptop and a wireless desktop, both running xp. A server which I have just installed win 2k server on which also has an asdl connection, and a router which has both wireless and wired connections. The router has an ethernet modem connection but my modem is USB, is there a way to use the modem on the server and use to router just for networking the computers.

The router is connected to the server with an ethernet cable, i can get the server to recognise the router, and the wireless laptop to recognise the router (not tried the other desktop) but cant seem to finalise the network

If anyone could help or point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it!!

So your modem ONLY is usb? This can probably be done if you want your server running as your internet router, but it will take some work, and at some point your server will get attacked by somebody. I'm also assuming your router can be told to behave as an access point. Is it possible to contact your isp and request an ethernet modem?

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Yeah the modem is only USB, I've managed to sort out the network side now, all I need to do is get the internet on the server computer.

So I plug in the modem, switch on the computer and modem and connect to the internet - fine. As soon as I plug in a LAN cable, it seems to stop my internet access, even though the internet connection icon is still saying active in the systray.

Any thoughts?
