I am installing 98se on a formatted hdd. I am using the boot disk with cd support. All goes well until it gets to the setup screen to continue or exit.

The problem: I cannot use the mouse or keyboard to get it to continue. I am looking for my mouse disk/cd but I think it has to go through windows to install anyway.

Any help is appreciated.

USB devices? You might be out of luck, see if you can gather an old PS/2 mouse and keyboard to load the OS.

These all worked before. I am just replacing the old win98 with a newer version of win98se.

I copied the mscmouse.drv file to the hard drive. What line do I add for device=mscmouse.drv to? which file? config.sys, win.ini, etc? Also do I have to add the line for himem.sys?

I knew all of this stuff before but don't remember them now.

Thanks for your help. In the meantime I will look up my old notes.

mattjurado, I tried to get my thread with your last input and am having trouble. Please try again.

What? Thread is fine, I'm just trying to find out what model the mouse and keyboard are, and if they are USB.

Reboot using your windows boot disk to load generic drivers for you keyboard, mouse, etc. In DOS type "sys C" at the A>prompt and wait for "system transfered" to appear then restart.

It is a USB. I unplugged to try that. I also reformated hdd. Am now waiting to see if it boots with cdrom access. It didn't. Have to boot from floppy w/cd. Even though I formatted the hdd again I get the msg that there is an OS already on the hdd. What gives on this?

I think maybe the hdd might be going even though I can access it. I get error "hdd error F1 to ..."

I just ran all again and cannot get past the "continue" button on setup. Still no keyboard either.

Thanks all. I will keep checking on other tips, but tomorrow.

Okay, that was important...

"hdd error F1 to ..."

If this is hdd error, hit F1 to continue, then your mainboard is telling you your drive is bad. End of discussion.

I was going to say just use a floppy with cd-rom support, then run fdisk, then format, then sys c:, then copy win98 folder off cd-rom, reboot off hard drive, then run setup. However, if this is what the system is telling you after the post has just completed, your drive is bad.

And again, just plugin an old ps/2 keyboard to load the os, then shutdown after your first boot, then plugin your usb stuff. Just plain easier.

Thanks mattjurado for all of your time and help. It was the hdd. Funny I could even see it to get files off of it.

Anyway, I cannibalized another system and took its c: drive. Now the fun begins again with all.

Thanks so much. Kudos to you.

No more help is needed at this time.
