Hello gurus!
I am a developer and know enough about Win2K3 to be extremely dangerous. You simply wont want me to touch your server! I developed a Website which I want to host on my server at home. At home I have 2 laptops, a Desktop workstation and a server. I bought a router - Linksys with built in firewall and DHCP server, a Modem and Win2K3 server Standard OS for a small Home Network.

Not knowing where I go with this I installed Win2K3 on the server and added DNS and DHCP server as 2 of the roles. Did I really need that? Could I not set it up WITHOUT DNS and DCHP and IP addresses will now be allocated by this LinkSys router?

Then, how do I get rid of DNS and DHCP? I already added a role of IIS server (Webserver) in the Manage you Server screen.

I am at quite a loss as I do most stuff as developer in Win XP and this (Win2K3 server)is new ground for me. My ISP gave me an IP address which I wanted to use for the Website config in IIS.

Any clues, advice and input will be much appreciated!

You need DNS if you plan to make your Win2K3 server a domain controller.

If you don't want your Win2K3 server to be a domain controller, you can remove the DNS role. For that matter, if your router can hand out DHCP, you can turn off DHCP on the Win2K3 server too.

To turn stuff off, you can either just mark the service as MANUAL in services (type services.msc in Start --> Run and then find DNS and DHCP services.) If you set the services to manual, they will not start during reboot. If the services don't start, they are turned off.

Another way to get rid of these services is to uninstall them. To do this, go into control panel and the double click ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS. From here you will see a new window appear. There will be an icon on the left hand side called WINDOWS COMPONENTS. Double click WINDOWS COMPONENT and uncheck DNS and DHCP. Then close the window...this will uninstall the services.

-hope this helps..

If I understand your setup correctly, you have a cable or dsl modem, a linksys, server & workstations and you say your ISP has given you a static IP.

OK, here is what I would suggest. Keep your server configured as it is. Allow your workstations to register with it. Just make sure that you have configured your ISPs DNS servers under the forwarders tab on your servers DNS. You will find this tab by right clicking on the server in DNS manager.

Next, you don't say how many nics you have in your server. Doesn't really matter, but if you have 2 you want them both static.

On the linksys, configure the static IP address on the WAN port. Set up forwarding so that any traffic for port 80 is directed to your servers IP address. This will keep you protected behind the firewall while allowing you to host your web site. You should also forward port 3389 so you can use Remote Desktop to remotely manage your server as well.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Thanks Mark
I will attempt to do this as you say. Failing this I will follow Josephs advice.

Yes I have the items you listed: Cable Moded, LinkSys Router, Server with Win2K3 and a few workstations.

At the moment I cannot create new users as it complains about Password Policies (complexity) that must be adhered to. I created 1 domain and set the Policies for that domain. Anyway, I will attempt to set the network up according to your spec and hope for the best.

You are having problems setting up the new users because the system is looking for the passwords to have 3 out of 4 character types. Uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols.

Create a user and give it a password like Password! and you should not have a problem.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

OK here is the outcome.
I read that it is NOT a good idea to have Win2K3 server configured to be a DC AND an Application Server.

So I removed the roles of DC,DHCP and now it is running as a standalone. I will use the router as a DHCP server.

Then I can set up the IIS server to host a website or two.

I got it all working now.
