Got your program in my COBOL For, um, let's see, am I an Idiot or a Dummy? Anyway, I was a complete failure at running it. However, Matt, thanks to your helpful posts, at least I now feel heartened to try it again.
Also, my interest is picqued in your Script product.
See what your courtesy did?
Thanks, Peg McMahon
Ms. McMahon,
You are far from an Idiot or a Dummy (Re: COBOL For Dummies - IDG Books) if you are learning about COBOL. No matter what anyone tells you about COBOL, you must remember that COBOL is the language of business and there are 2.4 million COBOL programmers in the world (700,000 in the US). Whether you are learning traditional mainframe COBOL or a modern COBOL based scripting language like CobolScript, your skills will be valuable.

The versions of Deskware COBOL that were included on the CD that accompanied the "COBOL for Dummies" book were very early releases. These versions of Deskware COBOL do not have support for all of the COBOL commands described in the book. Deskware COBOL was a COBOL based interpreter freely given away to thousands of people via the internet. The author asked if it could be included in the book because it is the only COBOL based "interpreter" in the world. Traditionally the COBOL language has been implemented by vendors as a COBOL "compiler" rather than an "interpreter".

Deskware COBOL was used as the basis for our current product offering - CobolScript. Because it is an interpreter, it is ideal for web development. You simply run the source code rather than compiling, linking, and then running. CobolScript is cross-platform compatible so you could be doing web development on your Windows PC with a personal web server, and then simply upload the source to a Linux, SunOS, or FreeBSD server and get the same results without having to recompile and link on different platforms. Of course compiled code is faster that interpreted code but, one of the big advantages to CobolScript is the speed at which you can develop and maintain systems that run on multiple platforms.

CobolScript does not support all of the ANSI85 COBOL commands, but traditional COBOL does not have support for doing web development. A list of CobolScript commands can be found at <A HREF="
CobolScript modernizes COBOL without compromising syntax. CobolScript allows organizations to leverage existing investments in COBOL systems and COBOL skill-sets.
Best regards and be sure to enjoy your programming,
