New user cannot access data

I have just added two new users to the Sun server. They will be connecting via MAC workstations. They are able to access some data folders located on the Sun Server but they are not able to access some that other users can access. I checked the admin utility to see if the permissions were correct and they seemed to be the sme as everyone else. I did not setup the original users however so i may be missing something. anyone have any suggestions?

Do you need to add the new users into the /etc/groups file ?
Do they belong to the same groups as the other users ?
