Hi all
I am new to veritas and I have this question When the retention period expires, NetBackup deletes information about the expired backup making the files in the backups unavailable for restores, but what about the files that are on the tapes does veritas delete them or I must delete them to use the tape

NetBackup does not imediately delete the images on the tape. The images remain on the tape and are available for importing back into the system.

When the ALL images eventually expire on a tape, then NetBackup will unassign the tape and make it available to re-use. When it is reused, Netbackup will simply overwrite whatever may be on the tape.

so if for example a backup on tuesday for files A and B and the retention is for 2 weeks
the next tuesday the same files are being backup, does veritas overwrite the old image or when the retention expires, or must all the images on the tape experis.

NetBackup always appends to the end of the last unexpired image on the tape. Any expired images on the tape prior to that point are never overwritten. Only when ALL images on a tape expire does that area become available for re-use.

What about tapes in the library that are half and half?
Expired and valid on the same tape.
Will NBU see the expired jobs are usable tape space?

no

If you have a tape that holds 100GB of data and the very first image is 99GB and another image follows that is only 10MB and theses are the only images on the tape for a total of 99.01 GB used space making .99GB still available on the tape for writing.

Then the 99GB image expires. There still will only be .99GB available. Finally when the little 10MB image expires then the entire tape will be unassigned and placed into the scratch pool with the full 100GB available for use.
