I have recently been given a Merlin legend system Release 3.0 from my boss to put into our firehouse. I honestly dont know much about the system but i consider myself fairly smart enough to figure it out. I installed the programming software and was able to connect to the system fine. After running the system for a while i noticed between the power supply and the processor gets extremely hot. I am kinda concerned about this but was wondering if it was normal. None of the units have cooling fans in them. Is it supposed to get this hot?

They use convection cooling. Just make sure nothing is placed around the unit, and there is plenty of air flow.

Okay I was just concerned because I haven't ran it with no one there and it would be a bad idea to burn the fire house down. I think I will put a small blower in just in case. I appreciate all the fast reponses. I have some more questions but I'm not sure if I should start a new thread or not. There more on programming and paging.

I made a wooden frame that supports 4 cooling fans. I mounted it just above the Merlin Magix I installed for my church:

The closet is below grade, but has no air conditioning, so I need to keep air moving throughout the summer. A 20" high velocity fan stationed outside the closet and running at low speed helps even more.

So the heat is normal. Is the unit thermally protected where it'll shut off if it gets too hot?

I don't know for sure. But keeping the top, front & sides clear will go a long way towards prolonging the life of the system. [smile]

Failing Partner power supplies can spark & smoke.

If someone needed to test modules to determine which one may have blown the fuse in a 5 module holder, it would be a good idea to point the top of the modules away from the face so any sparks/flames generated when power is applied wouldn't cause any injuries.

The switching power supplies Avaya uses can do strange things sometimes. Some switching power supplies are cooler than others, but the ones Avaya uses always seem hotter! The supplies are fused, but that won't prevent a fire if the conditions were right. The main thing is to make sure it is ventilated properly.

just like Syquest & MM says , keep everything clear so that the unit gets ventilated, I have many Legend's , magix's , Partners & ACS in the desert ,and all these years no problems , even on those that shut their air conditions down for the weekends, on some of the Partners & ACS we did tell the customer to put in a fan above the unit to help

Alright my first order of buisness is a fan under the power supply and the processor. My second problem is I wanna be able to do a speaker phone page over all the phones from any phone. I'm understanding that it has to be programmed as a special function, but does it have to be programmed through winSPM or on each phone?

You can use winSPM, regular SPM or the MLX20L console to do that, but if I remember correctly, the phone page on the Legend is limited to 8 per group. I don't have the Feature Reference Guide at the moment. So you might want to verify capacity.

Okay I will try the 779 tonight...if that works would I just have to store it to one of the function buttons on each phone?

Okay I will try the 779 tonight
Oops! The code is 799 (as TTT mentioned). If it works, then yes, program it on one of the feature buttons.

Okay right now the system is in Key Mode. Didnt really know the difference between the two, but im thinking the Hybrid mode would be better. The 799 does work when its in hybrid mode. All we are looking for is a system with intercom between phones, the ability to page over a paging system, transfer calls, and make internal calls between the phones. We have a total of 9 active extensions as of right now. Can anyone recommend which mode i should use the system in? I'm thinking hybrid as of right now.
