New To SMS so its probably a very simple problem. Software install 1

Ok like the subject says, i'm new to SMS. i have set it up etc and deployed a package that i created. But then i reinstalled one of the machines that the package was advertised to (its a mandatory advertisment) and the software hasnt re-installed itself. Does anyone know what im doing wrong?

when you say you "reinstalled one of the machines", you mean that you reformatted/reimaged the whole machine.

Most likely, the machine hasn't actually recieved the SMS Client yet.

Check the Problem machine, Control Panel, does it have the Systems Management tool?

Did you create the machine with the same name, IP? If so your best bet is to remove the current entry for that machine in SMS. More on that if we need to.

Make sure you have configured your discovery settings, and increase them to rerun more regularly, just temporarily, while you redect this machine, and force a Active Directory Systems Discovery.

Don't forget...to see discovered/net details of object in collections you have to right click on the collection > all tasks > Update Collection > Update Sub Collections, then move to the right hand panel, right click and refresh.

A refresh wont update from the database, and an update collection wont automatically update the machine list view.

Lets know how you get on with those lot.

Its got the client and the Systems Management tool. But i think you could be right about creating it with the same name/ip.

Basically its a lab with 65 computers. All of the computers will always have the same name and ip address due to the set up of DHCP and Active Directory.

Although looking in the collection window, i can now see two computers with the same name. The only apparent difference between the entries is that one has the client marked as obsolete and one doesn't. Could this be contributing to the problem?

Yes. The obsolete one is the old GUID.

Rght..here goes...listen closely.

Site > Collections, right click
New >Collection
Name : ToDelete
Membership Rules > click the computer with a star on it
shows Membership Rule Wizard
Next
Resource Class : System Resource
Attribute Name : Obsolete
Value : 1
Next
Search in this collection : All Systems
It may ask you to specify a (or number of) resource to add dirrectly to the collection, these are all machines that meet the rule criteria, so in this case any Obsolete machines
Select All
Next
Finish
Collections, right click > All Tasks > Update Collection Memberships
OK
Collection > ToDelete >you should see any obsolete machines (these are machines that are very old with no data, or have had the GUID for the specific hardware replaced with a new GUID, so new clients on the same hardware.
If you are seeing the clients
Collection > ToDelete, right click > Delete Special.

This will remove all the references to the old (obsolete client) in the database and you can carry on your life.
